UCL Round of 16 - First Legs - Feb 18 - 26

Great display, Real are a force. Can't wait to see how they do against an elite team.

Seriously, that Huntelaar goal is one of the most incredible volleys I have ever seen. Dare I say that it trumps Scholesy's volleys against Aston Villa and Bradford?

Unbelievable hit.

His goalscoring record was average for a leading striker at a top top team. He had 2/8 prolific years, the rest he was massively inconsistent and the general theme of his season was to always score against Arsenal and dive about a bit.
Yeah he more or less carried them to the Champions League in 2012, but it masks what was generally nothing more than a "good spell" at the club.

Lee Lee seriously quit, because claiming Drogba was overrated at us is an argument you cannot win and will only look a bit silly at making. Instead, Marvel at Schalkes goal.

You can't imagine he'd choose you over Real Madrid.
Why do you say that? We're a much more stable option, no risk of getting sacked after a year for finishing 2nd.

We also appointed our manager in May, whereas Madrid didn't get him til June. There was a window there to nab him before they did, since we knew we needed a new manager since December.

Don't be so touchy, I said over rated, that's all.

He was hit and miss(mostly miss) his first two seasons. He had a great year in 2007 and when you won the league in 2010 but generally his form was up and down. It gets ignored because of the CL run and his knack for scoring lots of goals against Arsenal.
His record against us was pretty shit for instance, like 3 goals(one well offside) in about 20 games.

His general play was excellent though, he absolutely destroyed the best teams at will.

Bayern, Barca, Arsenal, Liverpool are just a few of his playthings.

He was the epitome of a big game player. Looking at goal ratios doesnt tell the whole story. One player might score 4 vs Norwich, another might score 1 vs Barcelona.

Average? 1 in 2 is hardly average. If so, Rooney and RvP must be fairly average too.

He was a great player for them and their main striker throughout a period where they won a load of trophies.

1 in 2? 157 in 341 is 1 in 2? you're not good at this maths thing mister.....

Rooney wasn't the focal point of our team for 8 seasons. And Rooney had a better goal to game ratio than him anyway, which says a lot..

Drogba was a consistent bottler in the African Nations Cup. :D

I think he's overrated as a "big game player". Eto'o has always been my benchmark for that sort of player, not Drogba.

Everyone wants Real Madrid on their CV. There's still time for him to come to us over the next few years. He's amazingly only 54.

He threw himself about a lot, which again misled people, in the same way sometimes people think Andy Carroll's hold up work is something to savor. Drogba had a very good knack of drawing attention to himself, even if he wasn't play well. A fine quality to have but it shouldn't be mistaken for great football.

This reminds me of our 7-1 win over Roma where we outclassed them and then De Rossi got a cracker of a consolation goal in the end.

Ancelotti would've been my choice for manager in the summer. Born winner who goes about the job with no fuss. If only...

He honestly wasn't. One of the best big game players I've ever seen, particularly in his later years. He terrified a peak Barcelona many times. However, he was sent off in a few big games too like against us, Barca and Inter.

Yeah I agree with that, around the time they were both peaking, I felt Etoo was the better all round player, better finisher, quicker, better with his feet at linking play, not just winning headers and shielding the ball, he also didn't need to rely on the theatrics as much.

Sigh, it practically is, you really want to argue over a few decimals? You know what I meant. Rooney has 209 in 429, the difference is practically negligible.

Drogba was far more than just a goalscorer anyway, just like Rooney for us.

In Europe. When was the last time Madrid beat the best?
Not saying we were but you make it sound like we've been awful in Europe this last decade. If we consistently qualified for the quarter finals for god knows how long, surely we were amongst the best too?

It was the round of 16 :(

Bale lived up to his reputation... as the "worlds costliest player"? Weird

Well, a team of Madrid's stature should be doing better no? This year however they have a great chance. They seem to be at their best now.

He's obviously a very good player but the only way he'll live up to his reputation is if he emulates Ronaldo there. Which won't happen. He's a bit unlucky really with that, since the bonkers price (rightly or wrongly) will always come into it.

Given the amount of money you invested in transfer fees and wages your last decade was one huge underperformance.

They were a bit unlucky during Mourinho's tenure really. 3 semi finals in 3 years is a very good record whatever way you look at it and at a certain point you need a bit of luck which they didn't get. Before that though it was constant underperforming. I forget how many years in a row it was that they failed to get past the round of 16.

He's been to England already and managed a rival there. Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world and he'll get to work with much better players.

Besides, Ancelotti has been in informal talks with Real for ages. There was no window.

Drogba is surely not the best African footballer ever? That sounds nuts.

At his best he was brutal and I thought he was great in big games, but he wasn't exactly a hugely consistent player.

Eto'o was better on most counts for me. Probably even better at big games and a more consistently high level of performance.

However, I'd expect the best ever to be better than both.
