UCL Round of 16 - First Legs - Feb 18 - 26

If I could sum that up in one word it would be comfortable. Barca didn't seem to get out of second gear. City put firmly in their place.

I don't know if I'm in the minority, but I feel that Barca suck the life out of big games like last night with their style of play. It's painfully boring.

I do hope that they knock City out though, but I'm also hoping that they get no further in the competition, as I'll consider not watching the final if they're in it.

It can be boring if they don't create space and chances but last night they did it and I wouldn't call it like that. The level of technical ability and understanding between the players is ridiculous.

Whether it's hockey, hoops or football possession matters.

Moreover, check out the post match interviews. Look how rested Cesc looked/sounded in contrast to Kompany who appeared like he had just completed a marathon

Any ideas on the likely Bayern line up? I expect:

Szczesny
Sagna Mertesacker Koscielny Gibbs
Flamini Wilshere
Oxlade-Chamberlain Ozil Cazorla
Giroud

Loads of people on here find Barcelona boring. It's been a theme over the last few years.

I think they're great to watch, although I don't think there anything like as good now as they were when we played them in the two CL finals. Kudos to Guardiola really. He definitely had them at a higher level. Looking forward to seeing Bayern open a can of whup-ass on Arsenal this evening.

That's most likely because Cesc was sitting on his arse for the previous 7 or 8 minutes, while Kompany was playing football

Ahead of the match, Tata Martino:

"They are experts at set-pieces... and they’re the top scorers in the league so in that sense, they are a difficult side to stop. The best formula is not to let them have the ball. Their style of play is similar to ours, maybe a little more direct than we are but their players link up well”.

“Having possession of the ball will elevate Barça and at the same time, reduce City. Whoever sees less of the ball will suffer most”.

“If we don’t have the ball, there’s no point in us even showing up”.

Any ideas on the likely Bayern line up? I expect:
Ribery, Shaqiri are injured, Martinez and Schweinsteiger probably not fully fit yet. Martinez started the last game as a centerback, but I doubt he will play this game. The only question is Müller or Mandzukic, imo.

Neuer
Rafinha Boateng Dante Alaba
Lahm
Robben Thiago Kroos Götze
Müller

would be my guess. Götze could play as a false 9 with Müller on the right and Robben on the left or Mandzukic instead of Müller.

It's intelligent and mathematical football, no one is denying it. It's still very boring.

I didn't care for it much myself but they were making a point as well and most importantly Tata got the result he wanted/hoped for. At the end of the day, the game is played with the ball and City couldn't get enough of it - it's not like they were sitting back passing it to themselves. City played like they were the visiting side

Kompany:
"When you play v Barça you realise the individual quality of this team is phenomenal, it's so difficult to close them down."

Barcelona executed their game plan perfectly, City looked humbled out there and the crowd was largely silent.

It was only Clichy's awful defending that allowed Alves to get a cheap goal to finish it. Otherwise City would have kept it to 1-0 and would have given themselves a chance in the Camp Nou.

I just don't get Barcelona. They had 35 minutes against ten men, numerous opportunities on the break, and yet they endlessly turned back and slowed the game down. There is just zero verve about them. Hugely talented side but the style they play is just lamentably dull.

People say City's atmosphere was bad tonight. It was, but as the commentator mentioned, it's actually a lot to do with Barca's football. It sends you to sleep.
They barely broke a sweat and won comfortably in an away game. It was their easiest game in a while. They looked half-arsed against a team that has been destroying teams at home in the league.

Pelligrini's tactics were pretty cowardly last night. Seemed like he wanted a clean sheet first and foremost where as if they had really gone for it Barca would have more than likely struggled to cope with their power.

I think Arsenal will give Bayern a good game tonight and possibly win. The gulf in quality between the two is not as great as some would have you believe; should be an interesting game.

I don't think anything under 6/4 is value so I had a few quid on us at 4/1.

Giroud will score twice tonight as a small token to his wife, his kids, Arsene, Arsenal, his team mates, the fans, the board, the people, the linesman, to London, and the world, over his indiscretions

They're priced that short because of the flood of mug money from ackers. They shouldn't be odds on to win.
1.76 currently offered on Betfair is very short, they are clear favourites and at 2.2 I could be tempted but 1.76 isn't worth it (neither is Draw No Bet at 1.35).

Game's at the Emirates right? I dont see Bayern thrashing Arsenal at home but they'l still win. I'm expecting more like yesterday's clash. A solid 2-0 to Bayern.

Barca play different now, they don't go around pressing like they did under Pep. A lot more patient and they look harder to catch on the counter which was always a weak point for them. Technically they played a very sound game albeit not really offering a huge attacking threat, they didn't need to win this match but were more than happy to wear City down and keep possession. The onus was on City to win the game and I don't think they offered much threat. Thing with City is on the front foot there aren't many teams better but stop them playing their game and I think they don't adapt too well. Saying that they came better prepared this time but overall Barca easily the better side.

Was a definite penalty as well for me, stupid by him to go diving in like that. If it was the second leg with little time to go fair enough but even if Messi scored they aren't out of the game. Funnily enough City looked more a threat in attack with 10 men!

Barca don't suck the life out of games. Their opposition does. Same with Spain.

TGot a feeling Arsenal will beat Bayern here tonight, Ozil to have his finest game as an Arsenal player.

Arsenal have nothing to lose because most fans expect them to lose anyway. This could help them tonight. And the absence of Ribery as well.

2 nil up, and both being away goals really put Barcelona in the box seat now. City really have to pull something serious off to go through now, but I can’t see them getting anything over in spain. At least this puts an end to their quadruple talk.
Barcelona can't go through on away goals

 thats not my post you quoted..how did that happen?
lol, not really sure.. Whose was it?

EDIT: I think I wanted to reply to you first and then got distracted and forgot. Apparently the caf saved that entry and when I deleted the rest of his JSArsenal's post your name was still at the top of the post. Anyway, fixed now.

It'll be that but with Mandzukic up front instead of Muller.

For any of those who dont know, the Arsenal, Munich game is on Sky One as well as Sky sports, for those who have a small package.
