U21 Euro Championships 2015

Any ideas on what formation Southgate is planning on using for the group games? Cramming all the attacking talent in across a front 3?

Enjoyed the first 2 games of the tournament, Denmark were very good in the second half and will be contenders I think. Germany were a bit disappointing but I thought Serbia played well on the break, Djuricic and the RB Stojković both had good games.

Denmark looks good indeed, think Germany will improve in next 2 games. Maybe 2-3 additions in Nastasic,Markovic,Mitrovic would improve squad on paper but guess it could disrupt harmony among them,in any case heard that their clubs did not want to let them play, which would be weird if Liverpool let Can,or German clubs let their players,or maybe FA needed to pay that money to ensure them(they rather put that money in their pockets) or something dunno.

I hope England/Sweden will be in the semifinal played in Prague on 27/6. If it happens, I will definately buy tickets.

Sweden have a competitive squad, especially in midfield. To me, the strongest area is centre back with Milosevic of Besiktas (who played 90 mins against Montenegro in the EURO 16 quals) and Helander of Malmö FF (CL experience). Expecting no surprises in goal (Carlgren) and attack (Thelin and Guidetti, although i'd like to see Hrgota). Midfield is trickier. Centrally i'd expect Hiljemark (PSV) and Lewicki (Malmö FF). On the wings.. We'll see. No surprises in the squad apart from Arber Zeneli who didn't play any games in the quals. Coach said the squad lacked pace and that's why he was included.

Not getting my hopes up, though. Italy look very strong. Maybe we'll grind out a 1-1. 2 nice games today.

shame for Berahino but probably good for England, now there is no risk of playing with 2 strikers(or one of them on the wing)....

What? It's a massive blow for England, losing someone with 10 goals in 13 games who's been playing in that system since the start. With Stones out too for the first two games its all set up to be another underwhelming tournament. I just hope Southgate uses Pritchard instead of Lingard who looks out of his depth against the better sides.

Relax. We still have Kane and Ings up front and can play a CB pairing of Dier and Chambers which is better than most teams in the competition still!

west brom fan.....look, i really like Berahino and i think he is a good striker but england are better playing 4231/433 then with the two strikers. At the moment Kane is better and he will start as a first and only striker. If Berahino was fit it would be a big possibility that england manager would go in his classic loser mode(playing best players and not the best team) and we would watch england playing dire football with poor end result.

edit: Stones is a big hit though.....:(

Agreed. There'll be a much better balance to the team without trying to force two strikers in there, its almost a blessing in disguise.

So Kane up top with Prichard and Redmond either side?

Looks like it but i hope Jesse gets the start.....Jesse and Hughes would be the first name on the teamsheet for me, their off the ball movement and good decision making makes a job a lot easier for their teammates, this would be mine team:
Butland
Jenkinson Chalobah Gibson Garbutt
Prowse Carroll
Redmond Hughes Lingard
Kane

Maybe move Chalobah in midfield instead of Carroll and someone at CB, not sure who though.....

You wouldn't play Chambers?

not sure how good is he as centerback....at RB i would start Jenkinson, he starts ahead of Chambers and plays really good, great partnership with Redmond aswell.

I'll be shocked if Ings doesn't start now. Redmond and Lingard on either side of Hughes is a pointless team. We'll get overrun and then battered, isolating Kane in the meantime.

Very stupid, Milosevic. Penalty, red card, 1-0 Italy. Berardi.

England: Butland (c), Jenkinson, Moore, Gibson, Garbutt, Ward-Prowse, Carroll, Chalobah, Redmond, Kane, Lingard

Crazyness!

Weak starting 11, Moore and Lingard should never have been in the squad in the first place, average championship players at best who will never play for England again. Pritchard looked superb by contrast for Brentford last season and glides past players, either Keane or Chambers would have been better than Moore who should never have been kept instead of Dier.

Will Hughes is also a much better player than Tom Carroll who in fairness plays better for the under 21's than he does club, but he's not got much of an international future. At 23 he's yet to particularly impress anywhere, Hughes by contrast has a reasonable chance of being in the Euro 2016 squad if he can get a move this summer. Chalobah I guess makes some sense based on wanting a more defensive option.

But we'll see. I'm saying 2-1 to Portugal who have much more experience and a strong spine which should out. Hopefully if we do lose today its a reminder to Southgate of what should be some easy fixes for the next game.

I just saw the team, personally I'd have had Prichard ahead of Lingard and Hughes in the midfield instead of Chalobah, but hopefully England can get off to a good start.
