True that. A little scared.

Yeah but at the same time, they've all been largely shite for two years now and were a shadow of the rock of a defence they made up that made us so formidable in previous years, so it's not that bad.

All the people celebrating Vida's and Rio's departure will soon realize how wrong they were.

Oh yes it is.

Did you even watch last season?

If our CB options next year are Smalling, Jones and Evans then I feel adding another CB could be as important as CMs.

All 3 of them are injury prone and still have to work in their game to be serious United quality (Evans is the closest but with the least potential imo.)
On top of this, the often injured Rafael will need covering by Jones/Smalling a few times. If we don't strengthen we could be in serious trouble.

Now that Reus has come out to say he will be staying at Dortmund this summer I think Hummels might be an option if we made a decent offer. Another addition would be nice though, maybe not to the quality of Hummels though.

Not really. We played with Rio and Evans for the most part and about half of the goals we conceded were from crosses as neither Evans or Rio can head the ball. Smalling and Jones spent large parts of that first half out injured. You're right in saying that Vidic was great on his return, mind.
My bad. Smalling and Jones were largely out. But I remember them panicking sometimes whenever they played and we were largely praying for Vidic to return. Smalling seems to have improved a lot in that respect this season.
Maybe my memory is failing me, but Rio was very good in the second half of the season from Christmas?

Anyways, I do feel that this is the time to cement a young central defence partnership. Smallings+Evans are the obvious candidate pair. Though I would have liked Vidic to stay for his huge influence inside and no shit outside the football field.

Yes, hard to replace players like these who were the bedrock of our defense about 3 years ago consistently, but finding defenders to replace their current levels isn't so hard. God knows how long we will have to wait to see a CB partnership as formidable as them, may take a while and I don't think Jones and Smalling could ever replicate them if I am honest. I do hope I am thoroughly proven wrong on this though

Did you? Rio was shite (for the second season now), Vidic while still a good defender is painfully past his best, and Evra was a liability defensively.

I get what Ducker is trying to say. There is a lot of experience gone there. But in terms of their actual abilities on the pitch, I think it is the right decision to start moving some of the old guard out.

If Smallings and Jones are not kept shunting around, they will develop rapidly. Smalling, Evans and Jones obviously are talented enough. They can form the bedrock of our defence.

Rio was shit? Vidic was a beast when he returned from injury. How soon people choose to forget.

And there is a difference between moving some of the old guard and moving it out all at once.

That's what puts doubt in my head with their injury records: they aren't consistently played and it is preventing them form developing a potentially rock-solid partnership. Jones had a string of games at CB a couple of years ago and he looked so comfortable there iirc, but this season I feel he has been reckless and clumsy. Putting these two for at least 75% of the games next season builds understanding and communication beyond the vocals, where they will do things naturally without needing to tell one another, much like Vidic and Ferdinand got to do. This will only happen though IF THEY GET PLAYED AT CB

Letting Rio go was a wise decision imo but i hope we do our best to keep Evra.. He's bleeds red and even though he's past his prime, we need someone like him in the dressing room.. He's a guy who loves the club to bitd

Evra has been fantastic but Luke Shaw ain't gonna sign for United to play second fiddle, and Evra won't stay for the same reason.

Evra would be an ideal mentor for Luke Shaw and I'm sure he wouldn't mind playing 2nd fiddle to Shaw and help him adapt..

Well somebody definitely didn't watch last season thats for sure, Rio was great last year especially in the second half of the season he was in the PFA team of the year for feck sake.

Ferguson thought last year was his best season at the club:

How exactly was he shite last season?

And in your opinion Rio doesn't?

If reports are to be believed he was quite disruptive this season and his constant twitter mongering had become a bit too much. Also rumors that he was the one leaking the team news cannot be taken lightly. At this point in time, I would keep Evra over Rio considering that Evra is not as injury prone as Rio and does not have to be wrapped in cotton wool to help him get through a season.

So there is nothing conclusive that Rio actually did the things you mention, yet you chose to believe it and now you dislike him? And his twitter stuff bothered who? The club itself didn't tell him to shut up, then whats your problem?

They tell us our team is old and ageing... We let go of the old and ageing!!! Then they tell us they are going to be difficult to replace... Man you can't win with these journo's.

I don't dislike him. My main reason for why I would prefer Evra over Rio is that Evra is almost always available to play every game. Rio has to be maintained and managed through out the season. Now that we have lost Vidic, I would prefer a senior defender who can play all the matches possible without having to be rested mid-week. It's high time we have a solid and stable back four again.

Vidic: Left on his own accord
Rio: Old. Can't consistently be relied on...1 in 3 or 4 matches isn't good enough, and that also doesn't help the defence build a relationship with chopping and changing
Evra: Clearly poor defensively over the last few seasons.

The problem is that it wasn't resolved earlier

I agree with this.

A lot of the problems this season has been purely down to the defence.

Yep, they were the best in the world from 07-09 but since then it's been a steady decline.

I remember being in the newbs when that guy got Thiago to sign a United shirton video. Even I got excited when that happend.

Bloody hell this summer could be mad. If Liverpool get Carvalho and Arse get di Maria I would cry. Those two would be utter brilliant here.

Liverpool won't pay £37m on Carvalho. Because that's what they'd have to pay.
