But they aren't "much better strikers", are they? In fact over the last 4 years Cavani overall has been superior to them in stats, performances and consistency.

Van Persie has certainly outperformed Cavani over the past four seasons. His all round game, like most of those bosnian has mentioned, is better by a considerable margin.

Why are we hell bent on hoarding strikers and #10s when the rest of the world is moving to a one striker system? I don't even understand who's behind this transfer push now when we already have 3 players ready to put in transfer requests the minute the final game ends.

See, it's statements like these where I find it hard to keep a debate going.
He will improve us, unlike Fellaini, but he is not needed/ not priority.

Also, speaking of potential, RVP and Rooney are better than Cavani. They just need a technical coach that harness that potential.

I'm not saying he's as shit of a player. I'm saying spending over £50m on a player who plays in a position where we already have 2 better players, as well as 2 excellent squad players, especially when we should only use 1 striker, is just a terrible piece of business.

Rvp-mata > Rooney-mata > rvp-Rooney > rvp-kagawa > Rooney-kagawa, and all these are better then any combination cavani would give us. Like I said, completely pointless.

The thing is, he wouldn't. At all. Unless he's happy being a squad player. Is he a better striker then rvp? No way. He's no better then Rooney either. So in what way would he make us stronger? We can't use them all.

Cavani has never scored 30 league goals in a season - true story.

Some say that he is a Galatico, how about a Galati-no

Do you want links?

Be prepared to put your pants back up

P.s. You do know we do not get every transfer target?
Yes, go on, send me links to some stories by some journalists! That's scientific proof that the stories are true!
Oh the summer has really begun.

Less injury prone and a bit younger.... That's about all I've got.

On not many occasions will I be angry at the prospect of signing a world-class player, but this deal just wouldn't make an ounce of sense.

Well he would in other ways. I.e crossing and being an overall target man. But, as we will play on the ground with Van Gaal, he won't be of much use as Rvp and Rooney excel in every other way. Just shows you what Moyes's vision was, cross it in and let Cavani header it in. Don't get me wrong, Cavani can play on his feet, but he is considerably worse in that department in terms of vision and technical ability.

What has science go to do with it?

Some Journalists? How did you know first about Fergie retiring, Moyes Sacked, Mata being a target of ours etc in just one year?!

I always wait for something on skysports or our official website. If you actually believe every shit rumor on twitter then I feel for you.

I'd be inclined to see what plans management have before I was disappointed with this signing. None of us know why we are supposedly in for Cavani, we could have a perfectly legitimate reason.
Also, if signing Cavani doesn't hinder our ability to strengthen the areas we generally do need to improve then I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Let's say RVP is going, then Cavani would be an excellent replacement. For all we know, RVP is hellbent on leaving us this summer.

Everything is speculation at this point and I find it funny seeing people get so worked up over speculation.

Years ago, before the internet, there used to be telephone services where you could hear the latest gossip on your favorite football club. They would charge a pound a minute or something, and just repeat random rubbish from the tabloids.
I could never understand who could be gullible enough to ring such things. Now I see :)

You all make sweeping statements about something being so obvious, while previous transfers have been questionable, it's clear the board of a club our size are rather intelligent, the one thing pundits/papers get right about our team is our abundance of strikers, and the quality of them. If they are able to spot it, I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be working on strengthening that area unless we either

- Get him for ridiculously cheap and perhaps ship off Hernandez OR
- They know something we don't like potential exits and want to line up a safety net.

The only legitimate reason would be if both RVP and Rooney left this summer. I'd still be pissed though as we'd be letting 2 better players go and bring in someone who isn't as good for more money too. Also, he'd cost 50m at the very least. There is no way that wouldn't hinder our spending in other areas, and considering we have 8 positions (only keeper and attacking mid are set really) on the pitch a lot weaker then up top, we shouldn't be wasting money like what Cavani would be.

Apart from when he's been injured.

Apart from when he's been injured.
And as it happens, Van Persie went 2 seasons completely injury free when given special training schedules built for him, until Moyes comes in and suddenly he gets injuries again. Anyways, if Van Gaal comes, I can't see RVP leaving, he'd be the main man and if we signed Cavani without Van Gaal giving his go ahead I could see his signing being like how a few of them were for Bayern when Van Gaal just ignored them completely, saying "I didn't sign them so I don't have to use them" (more or less).

The Cavani rumour clearly doesn't make a lot of sense from United's side, which implies it's a leak from Cavani's, or complete bullshit. But even if it were a leak from Cavani's side (to drum up interest in him this summer and increase his price), it's so odd that we're linked, as the Chelsea link would make so much sense.

I don't understand it at all personally, so I'm giving no credence to it until a more reliable source picks up on it.

Where did you get this? I think there were this kind of rumours for Matic, but not the other two.

It has been widely reported from several reputable journalists about Thiago Alcantara. Including Ogden and Taylor. The information being that United had a deal in place for him, including personal terms agreed through his agent but that Moyes dithered on the deal for weeks and in the end didn't close it because he hadn't seen enough of the player and so was uncertain whether he could cut it in the premier league. Ballbag also confirmed it.

Strootman was allegedly lined up by Fergie but another target that Moyes didn't pursue. Given the money he went to Roma for, it would've been an easy signing.

Strootman, Thiago and Garay were all lined up by Fergie, but in each case Moyes either said no or didn't say yes fast enough.

Let's say he is going, we have 3 strikers at the club, Welbeck, Hernandez and Rooney. Its already an absolute nightmare trying to fit our strikers/no 10's into the same line up. The last thing we need is to buy Cavani who will cost £50m+ and give us a selection headache. Honestly what formation on earth do you see us fitting the likes of Cavani, Rooney, Mata, Kagawa, Welbeck, Hernandez into? There is no plan that could even explain why we would get Cavani, especially with our other areas (midfield and defence) being ridiculously weak

Or, he doesn't like Moyes and has the World Cup on the horizon so doesn't want to push himself too hard.

He's a top player, but I wonder how hard he was trying to be fit most of this year.

Maybe the club see Cavani as more reliable? Perhaps it's all rubbish anyway. I can't see Van Gaal wanting to lose RVP.

Or chose Fellaini ahead of them (as is the case with Strootman and Thiago pretty much). Just think if we had any normal man in charge (or just Sir Alex) last summer we would have probably lined up like this at the start of the season:
RVP
Nani Kagawa Valencia
Thiago Strootman
Evra Evans Vidic Rafael
De Gea
All ifs and buts, but that would have been a great side.

Cavani is actually an exceptional forward, his movement is out of this world, if we went ahead and purchased him... I don't doubt if played upfront he'd be a success, the only question is like most of you guy's I'm left wondering why on earth would we purchase a 3rd world class forward.

Strootman, Thiago and Garay were all lined up by Fergie, but in each case Moyes either said no or didn't say yes fast enough.

Garay there's evidence of, the other two less so.

Albeit playing in a worse league, with worse competition etc... Stats eh?

I think you are seriously underrating Serie A here. His record in Serie A is one of the best that the league has seen in years, and it wasn't even with the strongest, or second strongest team for that matter. His form has only dropped for the first time this second half of the season, and that is coming back from an injury and playing out of position. The competition for Serie A is actually as good as the premier league: Juve, Roma, the 2 Milans, Napoli and Lazio are all strong teams , and Cavani has scored a hat trick against all of those with Napoli; trying to undermine his achievements like this is basically saying Ibrahimovic hasn't been a good striker because he has constantly played in worse leagues.

But this is exactly my point really. No one really knows what's going on. Hernandez may leave aswell. There might be some truth in those Welbeck to Spurs rumours. No one here knows the reasoning behind our alleged interest in Cavani.

Fwiw, I'd be more inclined to think we are more sensible in our transfer dealings to sign a player just because he's potentially available. But then again, this has stemmed from Moyes time in charge. Anything is possible.

United never contacted Thiago, all paper talk.

Strootman signed for Roma 14 days after Moyes was hired, might hav slipped away. I can't remember anything about Moyes deciding against this signing. But, it was reported that Moyes was back in for him before he was sacked.

I think it was something in the Garay link, but I'm still not sure if he is the right signing. So I don't blame Moyes if he pulled out on that deal.

You can try blaming Moyes for everything, but this is just to much. His main failure was lack of experience and being afraid of attacking teams, especially at home.

2 years ago Man utd wanted Thiago and contacted Grahem Huntet about the way to go about it and gather info on him (Hunter said this story many times on the radio, check it out) but couldn't get him. As Fabregas went to Barca, they figured that Thiago will be unsettled there. After two years, Thiago wanted out and if Fergie was in Charge, would of most certainly went after him and reached his clause before under-21 euro tournament that he went to. If he would chose us is a different matter. But the thoughy of trying with all the clubs power to get him? That counts. Moyes's fault, again.

His father openly admitted we were in for him.

Even more stupid that we didn't even approach them. Daniel Taylor, who is reliable with united matters, said moyes chose to go for fellaini instead of Thiago because he wasn't premier league proven and would have been a risk. Doesn't get more stupid then that. There's no guarantees he would have come anyways, but I do feel like we would have had a great chance if we actually went in for him. Moyes also picked fellaini ahead of Herrera. Again, another terrible decision from him.

All our butts hurt after Moyes, but this is just speculations. Blame him for what you know, not everything you are able to.
