I wouldn't sell Rooney personally but if you could exchange him for a great midfielder? I think selling Rooney would be daft because we're not a selling club but if we did sell him other clubs would screw us over so if we have something they want, best to take what you can get if something is there that can help the midfield. If not, it's negative and will reflect badly

I'd be delighted if we sold Rooney, let alone for 37m.

Probably rubbish though. Wenger is not stupid.

Would anyone accept that deal ?

No for me - we apparently don't lack money, but still we struggle to bring players in to the club. We're stronger with Rooney than without him, particularly when we're so weak in the transfer market.

Plenty here would because of the player in question but I struggle to think of good enough reasons. Another 37mil in our transfer kitty does nothing. Our problems in the transfer market isnt due to a lack of funds. But yeah, lets sell one of our best players for 37mil and that too to a club competing for similar honours even if the money is irrelevant to us fans.

Nah, because if we don't have him another English team who need a striker badly will have him and he will be an enormous loss, as shit as he can be when he's on his game he's unreal.

I like Rooney, but if the offer is in the region of 40m, I would be tempted (depending on who we bring in)

RVP is a better striker, Mata is a better #10
Rooney doesn't want to play back up, and it does cause problems.
As a team, we are already trying to work out how we are going to fit the likes of Mata and Rooney in the team as it is.

This is all dependent on if we bring in a good enough replacement though.

Can I just ask, why are we discussing selling Rooney.? The tweet was a bogus one - he is not going anywhere. What's with all this fantasy transfer.

Do you not find it weird that pretty much everyone on this site always disagrees with you? You realise almost everything you say is wrong right? Please tell me you're at least aware.

I dunno. Ever since van Gaal got the job this place has been obsessing over how the most average players in the squad will suddenly shine and gleefully predicting our talisman for a decade will be discarded. It's weird.

Welcome to the Twitter discussion thread where everything is fantasy

I'll forever be perplexed by United fans who hate Rooney yet still like Ronaldo, considering Rooney, for all his shenanigans, is still at the club and has played a major part in all our success over the past decade.

Maybe its just cos both their names are being bandied about at the same time, but does anyone else think Fabregas and Costa look alike? Costa looks like his much uglier, meaner brother..

Ronaldo was foreign so he's allowed to want to leave... Or something.

Agreed. Perversely Rooney may be liked more if he had done the thing he's most hated for trying to do and left.

I think a lot of people eventually forgave Rooney after the first time he wanted to leave (cow in a field and all that), but when he did it a second time, it became clear he and Paul Streford were just massive money grubbing cnuts that were more than happy to make a mockery of the club to get a bigger pay packet.

Ronaldo made his wishes known, then when he was asked to stay one more year, gave it his all and was top scorer on the way to another league title, League Cup, Club World Cup and runner up to another Champions League. He respected the club far more than Rooney has.

You don't sell your best player (second or third - debatable) - especially to a team in the same league. Ever.

I agree.

But again, Rooney performed brilliantly both times after his idiocies. In fact, Rooney in the second part of 2010-11 was probably the best he has ever been. He is of course, not half the player today than Ronaldo is though.

And I don't believe Ronaldo had been ideal in his behavior while at United. Summer of 2008 was the most painful summer of will he/won't he I have experienced as a United fan, so much so that the joy of winning the Champions League subsided very soon as Ronaldo's flirtations with Madrid began. I'll agree that he has been respectful towards United in all his comments after leaving, but it's easy to be gracious once you have gotten what you want.

Ultimately, I think it comes down to the fact that Ronaldo is a better player and that is why the fans look past how he behaved that summer because that was shambolic. Agreeing with Blatter about the slave analogy and comments like "the fans will love me again when I score goals" will never sit well with me.

I wonder if we had not signed Rvp, would people still Rooney want gone.
I would like to see us sell Rooney but if we hadn't signed RVP then I would be happy for him to be the no.1 striker. However RVP is a better striker than him and Rooney isn't happy being back up.

Sure. Hit the Atletico release clause of 48, offer Koke 90 percent of whatever giant figure Rooney is on, spend the rest on the 11 million pound difference and get back to trying to sign Shaw, another CM and a 4th CB.

Even without selling Rooney, we are more than capable of spending 100mil+ this summer which will be enough to get everything you mentioned there. You're also forgetting the reduction in our wage bill this year because the likes of Rio, Vida, Giggsy left. Those 3 combined would easily be on 300k a week atleast which in itself is 16mil over a year.

We dont need to sell Rooney to fund our transfers. That'd make sense if our deals were being stuck because of a lack of cash. We've just thrown 27mil on an 18yr old LB for crying out loud.

Sure. I`m just saying, I`d rather pay Vidal or Koke 250K a week (ideally both!) than Rooney 300 when you consider we have RVP, Chicharito and Welbeck as striking options and an ugly midfield group.

I would too(for Vidal) but unless you believe the reason we arent signing Vidal or Koke is because we cant afford their wages, the 2 arent related at all.

Problem is that's exactly what happened with Rooney. Holds the club to ransom for more cash, everyone hates him. Scores a few goals and he's the white Pele again.

Yeah really stupid to spend £37m on a striker who would guarantee you 25-35 goals a season

Rooney has been brilliant this season? I must've missed his Aguero, Suarez level performances as we struggled in game after game.

29 into the new season, already getting slower and more sluggish. I bet Wenger can find better investments for that money.

Not so sure plus they'd make bucketloads in the commercial aspect

The underrating of Rooney in this thread is beyond ridiculous. He was our best player last season and on the few who looked arsed about winning.
