I think Neville says what he does because of his coaching relationship with the national team. I don't think he's foolish enough to hinge his job on English players if he becomes a DoF. I just mentioned the contract negotiations of his ability to look at both sides of the coin and deal with agents once the manager identifies the targets.
I don't think he's a carbon copy of the old school hard work + pints + sausages and bacon = great performances or anything. But if we get a director of football or someone in charge of recruiting for the academy from around the globe, it will need to be someone who already has what it takes, not someone who might or might not grow into the role.
