I'm glad someone agrees, it isn't naive optimism, its the knowledge that:
A. United are very, very wealthy.
B. The owners of the club are highly intelligent people.
C. Everyone is aware that the sustainment of the club at the highest level is based upon on field success.
D. Everyone and his dog knows the squad is currently a few players short of being able to compete for the Premiership and Champions League.

What do these 4 points equate to? Heavy investment.

This is what I keep telling myself. I just hope it's not false hope.

It's more probable that LVG has been slow with the process of actually supplying Woodward with the names of defenders that he wants. After all, he did say that he would take his time in assessing the squad. I wish we'd signed more players earlier in the window as well, but van Gaal came in late and the whole process was pushed back.

Ok, it was first reported in June that we struck personal terms with Vermaelen. Many reliable journalists said that Vermaelen is after Hummels his top target, and he ended up with neither of them. I really think that LvG had his list atlast ca mid july, one month ago and still the CEO didn't deliver one player so far. This summer seems like last summer and we all know how that ended.

I mean Van Gaal even named Di Maria, who wants to leave Madrid, if those unlimited funds were available ... Were is the problem? Look I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I truly think that in the end we'll end up with an average CB, probably called Rojo, an utility player in Blind and maybe a talented winger like Depay. If Woodward had those funds he always talks about I doubt that we'd be in this position.

That only works if the manager listens to given advice. And Moyes listened to so much advice last year didn't he. If the advice is given and ignored then Woodward has to continue the chase even if he knows it's pointless. I just think everyone is gunning for Woodward because he's the easy target.

I'm not blaming Woodward, they were both responsible. However to act as if we know he did his job right and Moyes didn't listen to him (when there is no proof of this) is a bit silly.

In fact Moyes latest quotes say that the club we're targeting Ronaldo as a transfer before he even joined the club... make of that what you will. He also said Fabregas wasn't even his target (twas a club target). Anyway I don't believe everything Moyes says so I take it with a pinch of salt.

Fact is Woodward is the common denominator from last summer to this, make of that what you will. The manager has said since the US tour we need defenders, we still haven't signed any since then.

The only thing is, all these points were the same last summer, and last summer we we're also in the UCL

I don't think that's true, last summer we were after a defensive minded midfielder and left back, but we failed to get either. Considering we finished 7th and the number of departures this year, we’re in different situation now. Only a lunatic can think van Gaal will turn this around with current squad. Last season Moyes got a team of champions.

Before Moyes even joined last summer everyone was saying we needed a few signings. Especially in midfield, and probably at LB and CB (since Ferdinand and Vidic were struggling for fitness etc)

All the points mentioned above hold, yes this summer is different after last seasons cluster feck, but the points still hold.

All of this was the same last summer, in fact the last point D is no longer even true, we are more than a few players short now of having a UCL winning squad. (Now we don't have Vidic Evra and Carrick is a year older)

 You just have to laugh at how we are managing to balls up every transfer target. It will probably take us a year to get him just like it did with Herrera.

Not having a go at you mate - this is a reply to a comment earlier on and the general propensity of this forum to blame everything that goes wrong with transfers on Woodward. But, for example, Moyes did know Fellaini's early release clause and missed the date, then went back at the last minute and paid a fortune more. That was a classic example of the Manager being responsible but I've seen on this thread it was Woodward's fault when it patently wasn't. I'm just really fed up that we always blame Woodward, and in doing so we can miss those really responsible. Targets are identified by manager - money (and limits on) sanctioned by owners. That's the only point I'm really trying to make.

Last summer we were coming off the back of winning the league by 11 points and being unfairly dumped out of the Champions League.

Di Maria would be an unbelievable signing, he'd completely transform the team. Get it done at any cost.

What have we ballsed up?
