That's the Mourinho Effect, he could turn Young into the best right back in the league, the man knows how to defend.
They won the CL with Cahill in defence. He's improved loads since signing for Chelsea. Natural progression. Jones and Smalling have went backwards since their first seasons here.

The SEVERE ANNOYANCE at losing is starting to wear off. Before the season started I was hoping for a good start and possibly a title challenge. Now after that it's time we made some signings and do all we can to make it into the top 4. I can't see us finishing ahead of Chelsea, City or Arsenal. I think it is between us, Liverpool, Tottenham and Everton for 4th. Hopefully our lack of European football will aid us.

This is very true. Two season ago, a backline of Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill and Azpi looked very average, with Terry looking past it. A season with Mourinho and they're basically the best backline in the league.

Just remember the whole summer was meant to be like this though.... unless today's defeat has suddenly woken everyone up, can't see why we'd leave it all until now.
Maybe the pre-season papered over the cracks somewhat. Now its obvious we need players and we need them now. I certainly didn't expect us to put on that performance today. I wasn't expecting a mind blowing display, but I thought we had enough to beat Swansea. As Van Gaal said, it only takes 24 hours to sign a player. If he really thinks its that easy, get it done.

But how many times was he forced out of the squad through injuries, or rotated to keep Vidic and Ferdinand prolonged, or shoved at RB or DM due to issues in the squad? I'm not disagreeing that Cahill has progressed and very much so, but he's also about 4-5 years older than the two and has had far more time in his natural position to build a partnership.

Playing a rigid formation and giving little freedom to players to go forward isn't the same as developing individuals into great defenders.

They're organized and all know their jobs, with the players infront of them protecting them well. His teams defend as that, teams and not individuals so naturally players look good in his systems.

A poster with 150 odd posts in 11 years comes in, makes a bullshit point and all you guys start discussing it, ignoring that this twitter discussion thread....

That's true improved under Benitez a lot but he has been a lot better under Mourinho and Terry was also better, the seasons before the defense was Chelsea achilles heel, but now they are very good.

Apologies m8. Wasnt trying to derail things. Just keen on adding a defender like everyone else here

No need to apologize me :) I think many of us end up being bit frustrated when the thread moves few pages but on going through it, there are hardly any tweets there and discussion is on something which can happen elsewhere. Maybe you have point, maybe not with that statement. I personally don't agree with it but this is hardly a place for that discussion.

They're only going to get better by playing them though, aren't they?we all agree we need Benatia. An experienced center back to guide them. I just objected to your categorization of them.

And Evans wouldn't get into any top 6 team? Lol. He's better than anything Spurs or Everton have at the back. He's certainly better Than Kolo Toure and Skrtel. I'd have him over Demischelis too. We'll see how Mangala gets on. He's no worse than Cahill. He's also better on the ball than most center halves in the top six, bar one or two. You say he gets a pass, he just doesn't though IMO. All mistakes are scrutinized ad infinitum. As with all our defenders, they've played with minimal protection from the midfield for the last 12 months. Any defender looks worse under such circumstances.

Nothing really wrong with the 3 of them except they are just not very good put together. They need someone senior to help them through, they've always had either Rio or Vidic to play alongside and did well. Now they just don't appear to be ready to partner each other. Losing Vidic & Evra is a tremendous setback to us this season in my opinion.

What has his postcount got to do with it?

That's what I think, there are posters in here with 10k+ and talk utter shite. Maybe the guy only posts when he thinks he has too. I'm sure he could double his post count if he does the odd ;) or :)

Until our cbs can stay fit for seasons at a time, it is impossible to plan our defence long term around them. they can have all the potential in the world but they need to be match fit on a regular basis.

generally agree, but when it's an average of about 15 posts a year over 13 years it's hard to take them seriously.
Why, surely each post should be evaluated on it's own merits, otherwise it says more about the person reading than the person posting. If you are influenced by the postcount then you are not capable of true unbiased evaluation of the point that is being made. I will leave it there as the point The Man Himself made about this being the Twitter Discussion thread is valid, just thought the postcount comment was an unnecessary cheap shot.

What has happened in the psg fiorentina match that had got everyone so excited on Twitter?

Someone just asked why I spoilered the Benatia news, and then deleted the post.

I'll respond anyway, it's because Vines mess some people about by autoplaying or similar to GIFs where it makes your browser slow, or even crash.

So I spoiler them.
