If I'm remembering correctly, Jim White was the one who broke news of our bid for Shaw hours after the end of last season

Jim White isn't one to speculate wildly on his twitter page but I'd feel more confident if more sources were reporting it. Chelsea were favourites.

Getting Benatia in to play alongside Smalling, Jones, Evans and co. would be like buying a Rolls Royce and parking it next to a 206 and a Corsa.

tbf it's not like Benatia's playing alongside better defenders at Roma.

Benatia, Rojo, Vidal and Di Maria

MAKE IT HAPPEN SIR ED WOODY

Well that's just rubbish. Evans is excellent, and Smalling and Jones are both currently very good with the potential to become top quality.

Yea, just like last season, the defense is a small part of the problem. The big issue is still the porous midfield.

Harsh, Smalling has been playing well in pre season and both him and Jones had a solid game today.

On Benatia, I hope it comes to fruition, we need some experience at the back desperately.

Jones and Smalling needed an experience head to guide them, they had Tyler Blackett who was looking to them for the same guidance. They are all trying to learn a new system.

I'm a big fan of Smalling and Jones but at the moment they're just not good enough. They've had potential for ages but have massively stalled in development for whatever reason. They haven't improved a lot since they've been here and haven't look particularly convincing at the back whenever they have played there together.

And no, Evans isn't excellent. He's average and consistently makes mistakes. Smalling is our best defender. Evans is the eldest out of the three yet somehow he gets a free pass that the other two don't get. He wouldn't start in any of the other top 6 teams. When he's good, he's really good, but when is ever that good nowadays? Rarely.

Sticking an experienced leader in the middle of our back line can only have a positive effect on those around him. Get a settled system & we'll see our defenders improve, they have the talent, shame some are so quick to forget it!

Look at how Gary Cahill has developed over at Chelsea compared to Smalling and Jones here.

Benatia! :D

Jim White I take it is the source.

Well one of Jim White's sources is the source.

I'd have thought someone with his profile wouldn't stick his head above the parapet unless he was pretty sure.

Yep, could be good news.

Certainly someone I'd love to see, him and Rojo would be great additions to the defence, still need something more in midfield though.

Jones/Smalling - Benatia - Rojo/Evans

Suddenly 3 at the back looks feasible.

They're only going to get better by playing them though, aren't they?we all agree we need Benatia. An experienced center back to guide them. I just objected to your categorization of them.

And Evans wouldn't get into any top 6 team? Lol. He's better than anything Spurs or Everton have at the back. He's certainly better Than Kolo Toure and Skrtel. I'd have him over Demischelis too. We'll see how Mangala gets on. He's no worse than Cahill. He's also better on the ball than most center halves in the top six, bar one or two. You say he gets a pass, he just doesn't though IMO. All mistakes are scrutinized ad infinitum. As with all our defenders, they've played with minimal protection from the midfield for the last 12 months. Any defender looks worse under such circumstances.

He's playing with John Terry, who is a great defender and a good leader. Jones and Smalling have spent most of their time at OT filling in at RB, when Rafa is injured for the numerous time, or in Jones case in midfield. They are miles behind in their development as CB's.

I think this could be a mental week. There seems to be a need for new signings like this club hasn't seen in modern history. The manager, the supporters, the pundits, ex-players all seem to agree we need an injection of quality. I'd love to see a few signings in the next 2 weeks. This result today could actually be pivotal. Its really exposed a lot of players today. Hoping for an exciting week.

Pretty much what I was thinking. Plus, there's been so much chop and change with our back 4 that when they have had the chance at CB they've had no consistent partner in the other CB position.

Easy now. I think you're applying the "missing period" inflation to a player's ability as seen with Fletcher when he was out for so long.
Evans is not in any way Excellent!

Evans, Smalling and Jones can all be good supporting partners to a top centre back though in my opinion.

Christ. Cahill is 4 years older than Smalling and 6 years older than Jones.
He also has a whole season playing next to Terry. Do you guys remember how solid Evans looked in 2012/13 next to Rio?

The club don't seem to realise that if we spend now and get it right, we could be set up for years to come. Then it would only take minor tweaking each season, if any at all. They would rather penny pinch. It will be false economy in the end. That penalty on the Adidas deal if we don't qualify for the CL could be the least of their worries.

Just remember the whole summer was meant to be like this though.... unless today's defeat has suddenly woken everyone up, can't see why we'd leave it all until now.

That's the Mourinho Effect, he could turn Young into the best right back in the league, the man knows how to defend.
