If we we bought him I'd imagine we would change formation.
He'd be used sparingly if van Gaal does implement 4-3-3. van Gaal has already said he prefers Rooney to play as no. 9 or no. 10 over no. 7 or no. 11. Rooney's also captain.

We do, and there should be a limit to our patience, but we can't expect wholesale changes within one, partial, summer. I don't think we can let any midfielder go unless we get another one.
Completely disagree. He would/will be one of the first names on the team sheet in my opinion. Rooney is more likely to be played wide or in a midfield three than van Persie is to be sat on the bench.
Well yes, the captain will always play, doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be Rooney though. I'd imagine LVG has a system(s) in mind to accommodate RVP, Rooney and Mata.

I don't see Rooney being shunted out wide much under van Gaal which is why I believe we'll stick to the 3-5-2 for large parts of the season. 4-3-3 will eventually be implemented as van Persie's age and injury record begins to limit his appearances.

Tongue in cheek comment, LVG has to pick a captain for the team, even if Rooney isn't playing, therefore the Captain will always play. In hindsight, it's not very funny, if at all.
As discussed by the lads on Football, Bloody Hell! (shameless plug) - a 4-3-1-2 (or 41212 diamond) would probably be the best use of Di Maria and still able to get Mata, Rooney and Van Persie all playing in their preferred positions.
Carrick/Fletcher to provide the central anchor whilst Di Maria/Herrera are there to carry the ball forward and link with the wingbacks.
If we wanted to keep 5 at the back, then he can take wing-back, central midfield, attacking midfield or even striker dependant on who else is available, form and opposition. I'm not worried about using him in various positions, he's one of the most versatile players going and quality pretty much wherever thanks to his style.

LvG said Rooney will be the first person on his team sheet as he is the clubs captain. LvG loves RvP so there is no way he would bring in Di Maria to replace either RvP or Rooney. Bringing him in as a #10 would be crazy as well having Mata/Kagawa/(Januzaj) who play there.
