I'm as frustrated about the lack of quality additions as much as the next man, but this post is a little off the mark I think.

"lost 5 players". Evra - Upgraded through Shaw. Ferdinand - hardly played last year and wouldn't have the pace to play in this system this year. Vidic - Big loss but still time to replace him. Buttner - Rubbish. Rather play Reece James. The others? Bebe, Macheda, etc? Hardly a loss. In fact hopefully the likes of Fellaini, Anderson and possibly Hernandez can be moved on too.

"Only brought in 2" - There's no Europe this year, so we'll have 10-15 games less than usual. Squad doesn't need to be as huge. The two we have brought in both improve our first XI immediately. We have never been lacking squad numbers. So quality over quantity is important. Also worth remembering that we brought Mata in, in January without moving anyone else on.

Moyes has gone and Van Gaal has come in. This is the biggest single strengthening factor of any team in the league. Our squad isn't great but nearly all our players underperformed woefully last season. If Van Gaal gets a 10-20% improvement out of everyone, the difference come May will be huge. We still have several players who are either top class, serial league winners or full of potential.

A lot of our young players are being criminally under rated on here. Two years ago Smalling and Jones was being touted as the future of not only our defence but the England defence too. Neither has had a consistent run of games together. Expect that to change this season. Both have enormous potential and both have already shown in patches that they are top quality defenders. On form Evans is one of the best defenders in the league. Another who is criminally under rated. If it wasn't for injury concerns, I would be very happy to have Jones, Smalling and Evans as our first choice three. All are good on the ball, relatively quick and natural defenders.

Cleverly is one young player who has not developed as I hoped. But Welbeck is a player I have so much time for. His close control, teamwork and pace are top drawer. I think we look a much better team with him in the side. His pace alone changes the dimension of our attack. He's never had a run in his favoured position. For me, this season would see him cement himself as first choice striker partnered with either Rooney or RVP. Wilson as the 4th choice striker.

It's a cliché to say it but I have to say it anyway. Fletcher's return to form is like a new signing. He's not the top tier level we need but he looks so much better with a full pre-season under his belt and has an awful lot to offer. He's just going to get stronger and stronger over the coming months I feel. And one thing we should all know about Darren Fletcher is to never underestimate his fortitude or ability to triumph under pressure. He took more abuse as a young player at United than I have seen before, it was shameful. He went from absolute zero, to cult hero in about 3 seasons.

With the change in formation, we are not going to be reliant on productivity from wide areas to create the bulk of our goals. Which is just as well because our wingers are shite. It's amazing Moyes put so much emphasis and pressure on the weakest area of our squad. So again, we have improved hugely here, potentially anyway, by playing to our strengths.

We are going to be so much more competitive this year than we were last. I see our rivals being very worried about us. Arsenal have done well to sign Sanchez, but running and creativity from deep was never a problem for them. They still haven't addressed their two biggest weaknesses, in CDM and CF. Chelsea have upgraded very well and I see them as clear favourites. Liverpool have CL distractions with a squad that isn't CL experienced. The loss of Suarez only makes them less dangerous. Their other additions could be good, could be bad. They spread the money quite thinly and in some cases speculatively. And Man City have brought in Fernando, who won't start and is only a slightly better version of Garcia and Mangala who was absurdly overpriced and can't get in the France team ahead of Sahko.
Really great post.

What does Scholes have against Herrera to keep making these comments? Has he said anything about Herrera since he joined?
He has nothing against him no doubt. Paul is just echoing what we have all been saying! Even with Herrera we still need a top level midfielder, would you not agree?

Delofeu is not value in the market, and Tevez was part owned by another company.

I'm sorry but :

1. How so ? How can one be so conclusive about a talented young player - considered the biggest Spanish talent with Oliver and Jese.

2. And ? How does this tie in with the loan theory ? Plenty of players are owned by third parties. Not all of them are brought along on loans. There's a recent example of Mangala. Also on a slightly varied note we even brought in Larsson for 2 months at a pivotal time for the club. Why this opposition to the idea of loaning players when he could feasibly strengthen our squad ?

We don't need him, where's he going to play? We have januzaj ffs.

For tevez it was the only way considering the problems West Ham had with his contract.

He says:

"On the new signings, I haven’t seen lots of Herrera before this summer. When United played Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League, he looked very good technically. He can run, no doubt about that. I am not sure if he has loads of goals in him. I hope he will prove me wrong. I am not sure he is a playmaker either. I think he is probably in the category of Shinji Kagawa or Mata, a No 10. I don’t see him as an out-and-out midfield player."

Also, he wouldn't be wrong to say that we haven't signed a top class midfielder. Maybe Herrera will be one in the future but he certainly isn't one now.

Good post that.

Normally this would be expected but after all that was said by everyone last season, Woodwards quotes, even Sir Bobby joining in, I really thought we'd spend big for once.
Woodward is fast losing the little credibility he possessed regarding transfers. Still prepared to be patient, but maybe I'm a plonker.

He says:

Bit weird that he says he isn't sure if Herrera's a playmaker, but is probably in the Mata/Kagawa No. 10 category... okay, Paul.

We just haven't done well enough - this time either. And things seriously need to improve in the last 2 weeks

Yes, on what I've seen of him in pre-season he looks much more suited to playing as an out and out central midfielder than off the strikers.

Scholes strikes me as quite bitter about something.

He strikes me that he's just a bit bored at not playing footy anymore, and is just having a pop at this media lark, he just doesn't care, and says what he thinks, don't think there is any agenda, or bitterness there myself, it's just Scholes's style, doubt he'll stick at it too long.

Watch the space.

I know the window isn't shut yet but feck me, this was the first year where we really needed to flex our muscles and spend big to get us back to where we were, especially after the players we have lost and players that may also be leaving.
It stinks really, especially with the ridiculous amounts of money we make.
I wonder how many more seasons of this before people stop believing the propaganda shite that comes out of the club (biggest club in the world, we can buy anyone, unlimited budget etc).

1. Come on now, there's always room to improve - the selection isn't perfect. What if Adnan and Welbeck pick up injuries ? Given our track record of fitness that's a real possibility. There will be a distinct lack of explosion and pace in our attack. Deulofeu would be a great option in those situations. Also we have to bear in mind that the formation isn't set in stone. We could very well get exposed with the 3-4-3 and Van Gaal might want to switch to his stable 4-3-3. Trouble is we don't have the personnel right now and Van Gaal has alreadu opined to that effect. But Deulofeu could easily remedy that given he's played that way for all his life. And with a possible buyout clause we could get him for cheap. eg. With the benefit of hindsight given the option should we have loaned Thiago in say 2010 or 2011 ? I think the answer to that is pretty clear TBF.

2. That's not true unfortunately. We had the option to him directly from MSI after Joorabchian paid West Ham a 2 million settlement to negate the club's rights. But the board or Fergie or both decided a loan move would be a safer option leading to the 10 million deal come 2009. Loaning him wasn't the only way, we could've bought him forthright from MSI in 2007.

Scholes strikes me as quite bitter about something.

Dunno I think he just says it as he see's it without caring what others think. If you look at his Rooney comments I can fully believe he's just saying what he thinks, may have peaked but still calling for him to get the captaincy etc. May be an issue though when he's becoming ever more public with his thoughts. Still suppose he's entitled to give his opinion if asked and tbh would rather have brutal honesty that people just saying stuff to keep everyone happy. The more people actually call out the need to invest the more pressure it creates.

I remember that summer, 2 years ago I think, when Liverpool got beaten to all their targets by other teams. The didn't sign a replacement for Carroll - missed out on Dempsey IIRC - and the owners+Ayre were vilified for it. Sturridge and Coutinho were signed with minimal noise in January and they haven't looked back. Obviously they've had some misses, but again, this window, they've gone about their business relatively efficiently without Ayre or anyone else making stupid promises in the press.

Quite annoying we either haven't learned our lesson or the Glazers simply don't give a damn. Seems like it's ALWAYS something with our signings.

Did you read the article? He just says he see's Herrera as more of a number ten than a cm whic is fair enough considering that's where he played. Personally I think most his comments are bang on with the exception of Herrera in that I think he can play cm well because he's shown he's happy to get stuck in. I'm not sure if he will be a top player there, I think he'll fall short of that but can still be a very good player for us and is already a first choice player there.

Do yourself a favor and quit following him. He works/worked for KFC. The only thing he's in-the-know about is finger-lickin' good fried chicken
