Strootman seems like a very likely January addition though, which doesn't leave me with a lot of optimism. As much as I'd love Vidal or a player of similar quality, I'm even less optimistic now.

I really don't think Roma will sell Strootman in January. It's much harder for them to secure a replacement in that window. I think that one might be next summer. I'm confident we'll sign another central midfielder this window.

Doing deals in January is often very difficult, Strootman will be fit by October from what I read so if he is the guy LvG wants and we are willing to pay Roma a huge fee then we should get him in this window.

They have Ucan coming in and signed Keita too, I doubt they'd splash out on a replacement if he was to leave. They have players there who'll fill in for him, albeit not as good, I don't think they'd go out and spend loads.

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't rule out us trying to do this. You suspect van Gaal would probably like him in as soon as possible within reason.

We won't hear anything about this until tomorrow. Cocks in for the night lads.

This is (eventually) how to do transfers.

The first all the twitter/journalists/press mob know about it, is when it's pretty much wrapped up.

Ideal.

Who is James Cooper ?

The guy who's always outside of old trafford on SSN and basically just rephrases the same stuff whenever the studio asks for an update?

I hope you're right! I assumed replacing him wouldn't be too much of a problem for them, as he's been out with injury so much they're used to life without him.

I didn't even consider this as an option due to the injury. How often do you hear of clubs signing an injured player? I suppose the situation is a little different due to LVG being his national manager and having some inside info, but still...

Wasn't van Persie announced late at night?

I think it was around 7pm - I remember watching a MUTV phone-in programme when it was announced that we'd agreed a fee with Arsenal for him. As I remember it, this was my expression:

Juan Mata was officially announced late at night also wasn't he?

Still I suppose we'll hear something tomorrow now, though will be interesting to see what the papers are saying about him/Shaw at 10:30ish

He was a SAF target even at his price plus Fergie was a tight arse for a finish so obviously seen something in him, he is also a LVG target, both managers have won everything and managed the best players in the world, he must be quality.

TBH in certain conversations a big deal is being made out of his lack of caps for Spain. David Villa, Spain's highest scorer of all time made his debut at 24, Negredo ditto, Marcos Senna at 30 and none of them faced the strength and depth in competition for squad spots. The great Xavi Hernandez was warming the bench at age 24 during Euro 2004 behind the more experienced Baraja and Albelda. It's really not indicative of Ander's performances for Bilbao. Some players are a bit unappreciated by their national teams.

On the other hand Diego Costa is being hailed unanimously as a great signing for Chelsea despite making his international debut at 26 and being largely ignored by his home nation.

Such a change would only happen if van Gaal thinks more than half of our squad isn't capable of fitting into the system he wants to implement here, otherwise 7 players is just overkill.

We need 1 experienced CB, a LB, a RB, 2 central midfielders and anything other than that is a bonus.

Not that I'm saying 7 players will come in but it doesn't mean they're all first steamers, could include youth and squad players

Seven? I can't see that. We could risk doing a Spurs and wrecking the chemistry of the squad (whatever chemistry is left, anyway)
They won't necessarily all be first team players though, 4 big signings. 3 youngsters maybe

Id love Muniain to come with him but I dont think we would have room for him unless he can play out on the wings

He plays out on the left, so yes he can play on the wings. But he cuts inside, like Mata does.

I was under the impression he was a winger. It wouldn't be one of the most absurd of signings if he is. I'd love us to sign a youngster or two who can play on the wings. Depay, Muniain, or someone like that.
