His main position is centre back. I'd be 99% sure that's where he's been signed to play. His experience as a LB is a bonus.

The reality is any club needs to have a list of targets - from the favorites, down to the second and probably third choices. The change in manager is likely having an effect - he wanted to see what he had to then decide what he needed. Sadly, seems the players he wants arent available so they need to move on.

Nah. I wasn't that impressed by him at the World Cup but he's a good level or two above Buttner.
He's solid enough from what I've seen but could improve a lot.
He's clearly better than Buttner based just on his World Cup performances. A regular starter for Argentina isn't too shabby where as Buttner is no where near the Dutch first team.
Rojo is a CB who can play LB.
