I don't know what to say to this, this seems a very strange comment to make.

Are you suggesting that all who signed for us in the last five years, have only joined us because Barcelona didn't want them or we paid them more?

I'm suggesting that we shouldn't necessarily be so picky as to say 'player X appears to favour a move to Barcelona, therefore we should abandon all attempts to sign him'.

There are too many variables for this kind of sweeping statement to be credible, including the League itself, language, culture, family, playing time etc etc.
The 'most players' makes it fair enough. Spain is a more attractive place to live than England for most people.

It's more appealing due to the cultural, lingual and climatic similarities with the countries that the majority of the best players are from - Europe and South America. Look at Cuadrado - he's Columbian and so speaks Spanish, it's not surprising then that he'd opt for a Spanish speaking country. We can try to compete with wages but ultimately Madrid and Barca are very wealthy too. The ability to attract top talent then offers a further incentive for players who want to play with other top players.

It's not really a fault of the club, it's just how it is. It's one of the reasons why we must obtain as much of the top British talent as possible. Players like Shaw are easier to obtain and more likely to stay. It's such a shame that we missed out on Bale & Ramsey however.

Not convinced by blind. we have enough options for LWB is young can continue this form. its down the right we lack any quality. and in Central defence.

Like Mata yeah?

Oh please! We had zero competition for his signature, he was frozen out at Chelsea, yet we still spent nearly £40m on him! It wasn't a difficult deal to do.

We've been a shambles this summer again. People are deluded if they think we're going to pull out the three players we need with just a few weeks remaining.

How can anyone defend this shambles of a transfer window,we are close to the start of the season and we are still penny pinching.

We paid a good price, when you buy from a direct rival, his situation (not playing or vital team) goes out of the window when it comes to transfer cost.

I bet Woody is itching to spend once he gets the green light from the manager, just like last summer.

So how would people feel if we operated like RM? Pursue someone and get them at any cost? We could have brought Vidal, Hummels, Di Maria this summer already, using their tactics.
If Moyes was around, we might have panic bought one or two of them but subsequently he'd have not know where or how to fit them in the team.

I was hoping we would have got at least one more signing in by the start of the season. Looking unlikely now.

I knew this would be a weak transfer window. Van Gaal is the kind of manager the higher ups have to almost force to spend. To LvG spending is something that only must be done as a last resort. He doesn't believe in squad depth either, he says that having too many players could disrupt the morale of the squad as not everyone will get the chance to play regularly. He likes a small squad and if need be he will promote from the youth academy.

I feel bad for Woodward. He will get the blame again but really he had to work under a dithering Moyes and a manager who doesn't like to spend.

Why? All it takes is an announcement over the next week and boom, we've got another player. Just like that.

Its not exactly penny pinching in terms of being scared to pay top dolla, we just spent 60m. But i agree we need more additions and it seems like a Uncertainty over which targets more than being too scared to pull of a deal at the right price.

I'm not sure what people expected with a new manager coming in after the World Cup. He needed to see what he had to decide what he needed.

Most business is done in the last few weeks and I suspect a lot has been going on behind the scenes. The club clearly has targets and money to spend. I'm prepared to wait until the end of the window to see where we are.

For me we need a midfielder and at least one defender. I'm confident we'll get both.

This just isn't true. A disagreement with Bayern once in his career does not mean he's been doing it his whole life.

LVG will want to improve the team. It's up to Woodward to make that happen.

He might not like to spend but he needs to, he's not winning much with this squad unless we're taking Arsenals 4th place = trophy approach.

Van Gaal firstly looks to improve players, secondly he will look towards the young players coming through the academy and lastly he will spend.

Summing up - the above

We spend £95m this year = we haven't bought any players
Just buy any players - doesn't matter who they are , just buy them even if we don't need them
There are 3 weeks left in the transfer window = we're at the end of the transfer window

It's got to be better than this bollocks.

I think that's right. Van Gaal seems to have very definite ideas of what he wants and the players he wants to do it. He doesn't want to spend for the sake of it.

If those players aren't available I suspect they'll move for second choice players. I think he's too experienced to ignore the obvious issues - especially at the back.

@Red Hand Devil

Everybody who is a regular in the youth forums; Brightonian, Elliott, gooDevil, khoazany, LR7 and others who's names slip my mind currently. alternatively you could view the Keane and Blackett threads, and gauge the general opinion for yourself - I promise you that Keane is held in higher regard.

You seem to be judging Blackett and Keane on the basis of 2 or 3 pre-season games, which is a bit naive and then to call others deluded and ask for their reasoning why their opinions differ to yours considering they've watched more of them than you have is just plan daft.

I don't wish to get into a debate with you about it, so if you want to reply by all means go ahead, but you won't get a response from me.

Ah, the "don't worry it's only May/June/July/start of August/mid August" brigade are back out :)

You'll be back on, on the last day, saying, don't worry, there's still 8hours to go

The fact that he's looking to move players out, and some sizeable names as well suggests he's not all about "improving players".

He wants players, that much is evident. It's getting the ones he wants that is proving difficult.

Except we haven't really moved anyone out though, except Butman. The rest are retirements or post Moyes blues moves.
