Why would Arsenal want Arbeloa when they've already signed 2 right backs this summer? Bollocks story.
I don't watch Juve loads but from what I've heard from Italians and Juve fans, he's gone way down hill and is pretty average. Anyways, going for the rest of them. Okay, Varane would probably cost 25m or so right now, and maybe Subotic around 20m as he's just coming back from an ACL tear or something like that. The others though are either not for sale at any price (Kompany and Ramos), or would cost £45m+. Weren't there talks of like a 20m bid for him from City, and Roma's owner said something like that isn't even enough for his right leg? Says it all. If you want a top class center back like Hummels or Benatia, and not a youngster with potential (even they are going for ridiculous prices these days though, like Mangala and Marquinhos), we'll have to pay over 40m.
And what do you mean where am I getting these figures from? From all the reports, stuff like bids being rejected, managers saying no chance, laughing it off, or other similar players going for crazy prices. These days center backs are going to cost a feck load because there aren't many alternatives.

Think he meant defending as a team is easy, as in, as long as you're organised you can do it effectively.

For Varane I just completely made up a number, as I don't remember anyone being linked with him and I don't know how highly Ancelotti rates him, but you're probably right. That just adds to the point though. Unless we go for a relatively unknown player from a poorer club, we'll have to pay loads to get actual quality there and not just Vermaelan or someone like that. Barca signing Mathieu and apparently going for Agger despite having loads to spend kind of highlights the fact there aren't many good center backs out there. Hell even Mangala is apparently going for 35m or something to City and I doubt many on here have watched him more then a handful of times.

Therefore, do you think he would want to spunk 30-40m big ones on a CB, he talks about the wing backs being the specialists, so I imagine that's where he would rather splash the cash.

Marquinhos was 35m last summer on the back of one season. Mangala is set to join City for 35m I'm pretty sure, and he's hardly well known or top class currently. PSG rejected a 35m offer from Marquinhos the other day apparently. You say there hasn't been any center backs sold for over 40m, but what center backs have got transferred in the last few years? The ones that went somewhere weren't top class players, they were youngsters with potential or out of favor at their old clubs, like Sakho to Liverpool. There just hasn't been any center backs going anywhere who were in their primes like Hummels is.

Argentinian guy plays for Villareal looks pretty damn good to me, only seen him about four times and cant even remember his name but Im quite surprised Barca havent sniffed around him from what Ive seen at least. They have had some good Argentines at that club as well like Riquelme, Sorin and one of my favourite defenders every time I saw him he looked quality and seemed so under rated just like Kohler years ago was Rodiriguez, shocked to see recently he is still palying after a fair few injuries for Fiorentina....any Italian football fans able to say what he is like nowadays?

What about Rio though? He wasnt cheap! But look how many successful years we got from that fee. The money we paid for Jones & Smalling pretty much accumulate to Rio's fee & we got 12 years of top-class defending & a shitload of trophies for our money, not to mention 3 Champions League Finals in 4 years - that wasnt a fluke.
Next season is vital for the club & we shouldnt be pissing around lookin at average players in the hope we get an extra 10% out of them.
We have the money - Ed's been f*cking braggin about it, so lets hope we spend it on top-class players that we need & we have a great season
