Why would Everton accept £14 million when they paid £16.5 million for him six years ago and he'd improved as a player since then?
Well because they clearly paid over the odds in the first place. He might have been a £8m player that turned into a £14m, he was never a £27m player.

How much do you reckon he is worth now?

That's not the point.

The point was made that United could've persuaded Everton with a derisory bid of £14 million. That's complete fantasy. He may have been worth a sub £20 million bid to United, but to Everton he was worth more than that, hence the inflated price.

This is the principle of every transfer ever conducted, yet folk still seem perplexed at the idea. Was Carroll worth £35 million? Torres £50 million? Certainly not to the buying club, but to the selling club, of course.

As much as I don't favour Fellaini, he was definitely worth more than £14m, let's not be too insulting to the bloke. I'd say he was worth around £18-22m when we got him, personally. He was one of the better players in a side that regularly got 5th-7th in the PL. The market puts that kind of player well over £14m.

He was never an £8 million player. He was Standard Liege's best performer against Liverpool in the Champions League a few ago, outshining the Caf's favourite son Steven Defour twice in the two legs.

Nonsense to suggest that Fellaini was ever only worth less than £10 million.

Exactly.

It's almost as if his fine form circa. February and March didn't happen last season. Lest we forget it was an injury-hit campaign for him and he was coming into a struggling side.

Still, let's not let common sense get in the way of a good scapegoating!

Everyone's getting kinda nervous at this stage.
Yeah, you would of thought we'd have at least one in since the Shaw and Herrera deals. Getting awfully close to the new season. They need bedding in, I'm confident were get players in. Whether it will be in the ilk of Vidal, Di Maria, Hummels I don't think so.
With reports that Hernandez and Fellaini are off that means we have lost 6 first team players.

You are jumping on a bandwagon that isn't leaving.

I simply asked you for your valuation. I wasn't challenging your reasoning.

I know you must absolutely adore the player because he was bought by Moyes but honestly, Everton at the time could hardly find £5m for a player and then spunked £16.5m on a midfielder very few people have heard about, a very limited player at that as we have witnessed. Bear in mind £16.5m could have got you Modric at the time. He did well there and justified his fee you could argue, but he never ever doubled his worth from already inflated £16m they paid.

In a world where Rakitic costs £16m, Fabregas goes for £28m, Modric is bought by Real Madrid for £33m you cannot possibly justify paying £27m for Fellaini. I've been in an argument with another poster here about valuation of midfielders and he made a good point in that they rarely exceed £40m or even approach £30m - yet we nearly broke our transfer record for Fellaini last year. He was badly overpriced.

If Felliani is sold, he will take Gary Birtles mantle as our worst signing of all-time.

That will be the lasting legacy of Moyes' reign far longer than the awful memory of finishing 7th.

Worse than the £4.5m for Taibi in '99?

When 4.5m was worth something.

It was obvious Fellaini was never going to be a brilliant player for us but he is certainly not as bad as some people make him out to be. The fact so many people are delighted he is leaving after just 1 season under the guidance of a terrible manager, surprises me. Didn't really get much of a chance to prove himself, compared to some other midfielders at this club. I wish him all the best if he does leave.

The same manager who got the best out of him at his previous club.

Do not blame Fellaini's performances on Moyes - he was never the right player for us and hasnt shown it.

Far from our worst signing. God, you'd think the rest of the side had some kind of stellar season and that Fellaini single-handedly ruined it based on some of the discussion here. He's far from bleedin' Dong Fangzhou.

Ando's not on the tour and Carrick's injured.

Well I'm referring to signing someone for the coming season, not just the immediate future...Anderson and Carrick also aren't even on the tour.

I'm fully aware of that, hence Carrick's brackets and 'Anderson still here'. My point was that we can afford to let Fellaini go in the short term without compromising numbers in pre season, tour or otherwise. I'd have thought we're almost certainly after another midfielder regardless of Fellaini's sale.

Exactly, we will have to wait and see.

Dong didn't cost £27 million.

To be honest, mate, if that's your opening gambit, and opinion of me as a poster, it's not worth continuing the debate.
Well you'd defended all things Moyes forever so understandably your stance on Fellaini is going to be biased, probably just like mine although in the opposite way since I wasn't particularly fond of the smug Scot. Nothing particularly wrong with either IMO.

Regardless of what he has done for us, he is unlikely to get a game in the future.

He needs to go for his own benefit.

Thought so too, then i saw him waddling around the pitch aimlessly at the WC. I think its best he leaves.

La Tercera stating that van Gaal has asked Woodward to speed up and close the deal for Vidal.

Even though it's encouraging for us, how can someone really know what LVG told Woodward? Unless Woody told "La Tecera", "Louis told me to speed up, so here I am. Share the news yeah?", it's just hard to believe.

Fellatio the agent, must be the source, if there is one.

He is genuinely up there with our worst signings, he cost close to £30 million and contributed nothing but anguish.

Yep what a load of rubbish, if anything it's LVG holding any deals due to him assessing the squad in America. Hopefully we have some activity when we're back. Hopefully

I think so. Fellaini was bought to be a key feature of our 1st team (you don't pay £28m for a sub) so you'd have to look at other players who were brought in under a similar set of circumstances for our worst ever signing. Birtles was supposed to be a great striker who would do great things here, hence why he's so infamous.

Given what Fellaini was brought here to do, he has been an absolute and utter bust.

See above.

Nobody expected anything from Fangzhou or Bellion or Bebe, etc, etc. In fact, you could line up all our actual worst players and they wouldn't tally the price Fellaini cost.

Says it all.

Fellaini was one of the best performers for Belgium during the qualification campaign along with De Bruyne and Witsel.

Everton played a different system compared to us, in his last season Fellaini scored more goals than any of our central midfielders have in their entire career.

I dont disagree with that - the key part in my statement was "for us". Fellaini was never going to work for Utd. He just isnt suited to our style of play - and seemingly LVG agrees.

That's nonsense in the first place and a wrong stat. Secondly he was not playing as a midfielder in his last season for Everton.
