The problem is that we have started "acting like it far too late." I think we're a lot more likely to spend in line with the market now. We do pay and offer huge wages, some of the biggest in Europe. The problem, and whether you blame the Glazers for this is secondary, is that we seemed to 'pull out' of deals and look for value every Summer.
Even throughout our successful years, we weren't spending in line with the likes of Madrid and Barcelona. Our transfer record stood still for 5 years, and whole host of £30 million plus signings have been conducted all across Europe, even by teams not in the Champions League. Moyes has taken charge, we predictably falter, and only then do we look like spending the kind of money a club of our stature should be spending. Mata was that kind of buy. Of course, this is why others and I were so livid with transfer activity last Summer. We were in a good position yet refused, or failed, to do business like we should have. Right now, it is more difficult, primarily due to the indecision that surrounds us and the lack of Europe. Really, only massive money can allow us to purchase the kind of player we want now. And I do think we want to work that way this Summer, the major irritant is that we should have been doing it sooner, not in vain.
Talk is cheap from Woodward though. All we are seeing is the same nonsense we saw last summer. He has a convenient excuse that the manager changed (despite it being abundantly clear that Moyes position was under significant threat from February, therefore, had tons of time to cast a wider net on potential targets).
I just do not trust the Glazers one bit and fully expect we will go through another summer without really spending.
