Heard the same shite regarding Van Persie. "To old, to injury prone".

He will turn 30 before the season starts and he's had a few injuries lately, £25m is a complete waste of money.

Looks like Eddy has been briefing some of the papers again.

Yep - I'm sure the hacks in this case have gotten this from sources that should be reliable, but this is clearly not going to happen.

I'm genuinely curious who we are actually going to sign - Shaw aside, all the links we've had are to players that are well out of reach, or at best unlikely. There seems to be a lack of realistic targets at the moment, so who are we going to sign?

A great acquisition for United. I don't understand why some people are complaining.

He will be a good first signing for us. A 30 yr old world class midfielder still has many more years of quality.

£25m is a lot, yes. However, he is a World Class midfielder who will instantly improve our midfield significantly. Additionally, he will also be a statement of intent from the club and would certainly have an effect on other players that we go in for in the future when they're looking at us as a proposition.

He will also come on pretty high wages I am sure. Would be a big investment on our part.
It will go a long way to getting us back into the CL right away and given the money at stake, it could be a great investment. For a non-CL team, we were always going to have to take a risk like that and apens big. Put him alongside a young up and coming box to box midfielder and suddenly we might have a stew going.

Get it done Woody

Exactly, it would be about more than just filling a hole for a few years. I would absolutely love us to sign him, I don't really care what we pay.

Also, does anyone regret us paying a similar amount for a similarly aged, similarly 'injury-prone' van Persie? After one year he was considered an absolute hero.

He'd be at the top of his game for next 3 years and if he helps us get into champions league next year he'd be worth every penny.

As much as I like Bastian, I don't want a stop gap player. If LvG wants a box to box midfielder he should sign Witsel. He'll prove himself with Belgium in the tournament.

Does he want to come though?

Sorry to put a downer on things

Very rear you get clubs putting in bids for players, without some sort of understanding between player and bidding club.

We've been doing it since Woodward took over, only hope I have with this one is that LVG has given Bastian a call.

Crazy that people would turn down the chance to sign him. Our current best midfield options are a 33 year old Carrick, Fellaini and Tom Cleverley ffs. Who cares if he is 30 and has had a bit of a disrupted season. Half fit he's still better than what we've got and he would be well worth the gamble, for less then we paid for bloody Fellaini.

Bayern aren't daft. They'll sell him to us for a good fee in the knowledge that he's become a bit injury prone and that they're building another team for the future. It's just another step in the process of us being left behind on the European stage.

Disagree. Think it would just be mutually beneficial. It's no secret we are at our weakest in midfield and they have an array of talent there. Even last year when we were at the depths of despair we gave Bayern a damn good run for their money.

Bayern selling an injury prone player to United and thus United falling be hide in Europe. This all sounds like a bad idea to me.

Us signing Schweinsteiger to add to a midfield of Carrick, fellaini, cleverley and fletcher leaves us further behind on the European stage. Makes sense.

Seriously though, why the hell would people complain about this if it were to happen? After Vidal he's probably as close as it gets to a dream midfield signing for us to get us back to the top.

Some of these comments are astonishing.

If City or Chelsea signed Schweinsteiger he would be the greatest signing ever and we would be labeled as 'shit', 'mid table' etc because we never buy any players.

People moan about us not spending any money, and then moan when we do.

What we need more urgently in our midfield is some young and quick... That should be our priority imo

They are absolutely bizarre. We have a massive midfield crisis, are in desperate need of quality, but people are saying that they don't want one of the worlds best centre midfielders who is pretty much EXACTLY what we need. Insane.

If Bayern said all it takes is 25 million, then give them 26 for good measure and be done. No fecking around, no shrewd negotiating tactics like it's some sort of sponsorship deal, just pay it.

As i said i Schweinsteiger thread he would be the perfect signing. All players on the field will benefit from him. And we need experience after we lost Vidic and Ferdinand. He can be on tp for another 3 years and this is fine for me.

And the price? We never in my lifetime as a supporter of Manchester United had any german player. If we bring in arguably the most marketable german player the finances will surely benefit from it.

I'd have more confidence in Scweinsteiger playing on his own in a midfield two than the current options we have there. That's how bad our midfield has gotten.

I'd have more confidence in him playing midfield on his own than paired with the current lot

Yeah, sorry, that's what I was trying to say. I'd rather play with 10 men + Schweinsteiger than without him and any of our current lot.

So many media outlets going with the Schweini story probably means that Woodward has been speaking to the media again.

Put him in midfield with Jones. That'd be unstoppable.
This may sound a bit crazy but why don't we sign another midfielder? That might be pushing it we've only signed two in the last 8 seasons and one of them was Fellaini :(
