Remember, Mata/Rooney is likely to play a wide role, and he probably has Januzaj in his plans. I think Valencia has been kept on for cover at right-back as much as anything else - he's known for moving players around and playing people in different positions so it wouldn't surprise me since we don't seem to be planning to buy one.

A bit condescending. Up until a few years ago it was United's transfer policy to not spend big on players aged more than 26 years. Unless you believe Fergie and Gill spent hours playing FIFA together, there's more to it than that.
Didn't mean to be condescending. I do feel like player decline is over exaggerated by a fair few people though.

I think it has a lot to do with the FIFA video game. Players on that decline rapidly after 29. It's brainwashed a whole generation and it's even rubbing off on people who don't play FIFA.
My thoughts exactly and it drives me mad (both on FIFA and in real life)!

When I play FM, I rarely sign players over the age of 20 , but yeah, I think people look at ages and consider them passed it to early. It all depends on the type of player you are signing.
Michael Owen for example was an explosive quick striker, and has now retired at a young age, whereas a player like RVP, could go on quite a big longer because his game has little to do with pace.
The likes of Pirlo, Gerrard etc again, can go on for longer as they can pass the ball about and don't need to run here there and everywhere

I'd put money in it that we won't be getting any new wide players in. Think Nani will be the only player leaving in that area and maybe Zaha on another loan.
Ashely Young needs to feck off, but can't see it

You may well be right, and midfield and defence are obviously where most of the work needs to be done. I do think it would be sensible to freshen things up out wide though, with an injection of both pace and quality. It would be a little disappointing if more than one of Valencia, Nani and Young remained at the club going into next season.

I hope the Sanchez saga isn't resolved in a hurry so that LvG can evaluate our squad (when he goes on the pre season tour) and make a move for him.

It doesn't look like we're in the running for Sanchez, but Di Maria (superior player in my view), Moura (four years younger and with huge potential) and Cuadrado (more versatile and coming off the back of a better World Cup) might possibly be available.

Totally forgot about him, why isn't he in Brazils WC squad?

I agree with that, there's definitely a tendency to write off players too readily. Then again, I think you also have to recognize that with players being trained to hard and focused from a young age and being exposed to a very tough schedule early on, players usually do peak earlier and burn out a bit quicker nowadays with the increased physical demands. Only CB's and goalkeepers peak in their late twenties nowadays.

Also, it is a financial calculation. There's no doubt Vidal is a better player than Carvalho but if it's five/six years from a top-top player for 50 million or 10/11 years from a potential top player for half that price, it's not a straightforward choice.

Sorry for the poor wording of this post, hope it's still clear what I'm trying to say.

I assume Big Phil and Hulk sleep together...That is the only reason he can be there
People used to say he was over rated and so inconsistent, but I hadn't watched him, and expected big things from him, but wow....

As for Moura, I think Scolari decided upon Bernard ahead of Moura, but I could be wrong

Yeah there's no problem with that, there's so much fun developing young'uns into stars on those games.

He just wasn't called up. Quite a big mistake in my opinion considering Neymar is basically Brazil's only creative player.

It's generally a strange Brazil squad. Filipe Luis, Miranda and Coutinho should have been there as well, also one of Rafael/Rafinha.

As far as I remember, it wasn't until the Berbatov transfer kind of backfired that the Glazers, according to the papers, decided that we shouldn't spend that kind of money on players with little sell-on value. And then we made an exception with RvP because he was too good to turn down, and when he went on to win us the title we probably dropped the whole idea. But yeah, I don't believe anyone at the club said that it out loud. It was widely reported though.

Ah. That timeline would fit alright.

Like you say, though, it was one of those things that was widely reported but nobody ever came out and confirmed it. At least, not that I can remember?

Yeah, I think no-one doubts that when possible, we prefer to buy young, but no, I don't think Gill or Fergie ever directly said that we didn't want to buy 27+ players for more than XX amount. Was one of those 'paper truths' that they report so much that people stop questioning it.

Does everyone saying about signing Sanchez forget that we've got Adnan?

I can't see us signing a winger, we've got too many already.

Mundo Deportivo claims Barcelona and Liverpool have started negotiations for the transfer of Luis Suárez, Alexis Sánchez not included.

Was you one of those who said "we don't need RVP, we have enough strikers already" out of interest?

Also, apart from Adnan (who is actually a central player but does a job on the left) the rest of wingers are dog compared to Alexis Sanchez.

Agreement reached with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Diego Costa: http://che.lc/BhUpY2 #CFC

A big fat meh after the world cup.. though I expect he'll be a good signing for them unlike the other expensive strikers they've signed.

I'd be kind of worried if we don't sign a wide player, they've all been rubbish for two seasons now. Van Gaal is not a magician and i can't even see him improving them.

Dutch medium VI is reporting that Liverpool are seriously looking at Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as a replacement for Suarez. Arsenal interested too

No, I loved the RVP signing, and we didn't have too many strikers at that time anyway, we had Rooney, Hernandez and Welbeck.

If we do sign Sanchez, I think we need to get rid of Young, Nani, and Kagawa minimum.

Current wingers (or players that need to squeezed into the team that might go wide): Nani, Young, Valencia, Januzaj, Welbeck, Mata, Kagawa, Lingard, Zaha, Lawrence coming through too.

Far too many players, not enough places.

I can't see us signing a winger unless we start seeing more leaving soon.

There's only one year left on Huntelaar's contract. Huntelaar refusing to extend with Schalke. Wants to win silverware for once.

We had Rooney, Hernandez and Berbatov when we signed RVP..

We do seem to have a lot of wide players but none of them are in the same class as Sanchez.. I'd quite happily see Young, Nani and one off Lingard/Zaha leave to make way for him. The others Kagawa/Mata really need to play through the center to get the best out of them, something I hope we'll see LVG do.

Generally need two top quality wingers in a squad, and our one is still 19.

I would be very happy if Suarez left Liverpool to go to Barca and Sanchez wasn't involved. Give them the €80 million. They will struggle to attract any player as good as Luis Suarez.

If Huntelaar is Suarez' replacement, I'm not too worried. They aren't gonna be near the top next season without the cannibal.
