Randomised Control Trial.

Control Group: First XI including a midfield of Carrick, Cleverly and Fellaini
Experimental Group: First XI including a midfield of Carrick, Herrera and Vidal

Both groups have a go playing Stoke on a wet, windy Wednesday night. We can draw our conclusions from there.

Gerrard and Lampard were two of the best midfielders in the world in their prime. They had it all: creativity, they could pass it short, pass it long, score goals, great engines, terrific strength, etc. Granted, they weren't always the most accurate passers and couldn't always keep possession ticking over but if you were to put them in a midfield 2 in their prime they'd somehow work it out. Anyone who watched them play could tell you they were quality. I mean, 2 world class players used to bossing it in the Champions League... how could it not?

To be fair, from the sounds of it Herrera and Vidal have enough about them to make it work anyway, but it seems like a big risk to think you can always win games with a midfield which would play like that, particularly in Europe. I'm not questioning how good either is on his own merits, only whether they'd work as a partnership. Their track records give me doubt, although a few of the responses make me think maybe it would be alright.

Nah, my peak was my Call Me Maybe thread, where I argued for 3 pages that it was the greatest pop song ever written. Nev's a pussycat.

good post

Sounds like they're both risk takers.

I'm guessing we wouldn't be able to go toe-to-toe with any of the tiki-taka masters, which is a worry because we don't have a lot of pace for counter-attacking. Unless we buy someone like Sanchez or LvG can work his magic on Welbeck.

I think Bayern, Dourtmund and this World Cup has proved that the way to overcome tiki-taka is by having a group of hard working players. IF Herera and Vidal were our partnership, I would have confidence in overcoming Barcelona as opposed if we had Scholes and Carrick.

Our counter attack isn't really that slow; RVP and mata may be, but the rest of them still are a quick. Rooney is quicker than he looks and Valencia is one of the quickest in the world.

Dave, Rafa, Jones, Smalling, Shaw, Carrick, Herrara, Adnan, Mata, Rooney, RVP.

Would be happy with that. Young, English Core

Put Carrick on the bench and Rooney out of the no.10 role.

Neymar - Suarez - Messi
vs
Bale - Aguero - Ronaldo

Which one wins?

Of course they came circling after the bite; they likely anticipated a cut-price deal. Any offer they were anticipating the day before the bite would, I suspect, look very different to any made the day after.

It's pathetic how people can defend Suarez for biting a player for the 3rd time.

Treated him like a dog?

He's still breathing isn't he?
