He's played on the left of a midfield three with RM. Central midfield where Mata finds himself in this system, granted Mata is ahead of two central players rather than on the left. What I meant was he'll play instead of Mata. Out of Mata, Herrera, Carrick and Di Maria, the most balanced midfield consists of the latter three. He'll take Mata's place.
No, he won't. They'll both play most of the games, guaranteed. Di Maria is not a number 10 and Mata is not a central midfielder.

Is it just me who suddenly really likes Ballague since he broke the news about Di Maria? He just seemed to excited.
 was about to comment on him. We should stop calling him "Ballbag"...even if just for the day/week.

It's like he knows he gets so many stories wrong, the 1 he somehow knew he was getting right, he couldn't help but run off and shout it at the nearest news station.

Well obviously you're entitled to your concerns but van Gaal is not someone who would just buy a muppet signing for the sake of it and he will definitely feel that Di Maria is a crucial purchase for what he wants to achieve. He will also know the squad weaknesses as well as anyone else by now and that's the reason he will almost inevitably strengthen those positions as well. You seem to be under the impression that van Gaal is choosing a big money signing in attack instead of one in midfield but that probably is not the case. They will have weighed up who they need, who they want and who is available. Maybe they don't think or want any of the big money midfielders that are around and want to pursue lesser value players and therefore have concluded that spending big on Di Maria is feasible. Also, we need another midfielder for certain but our main problem at the moment is that our two main/best/proper midfielders are both injured. Carrick, Herrera and hopefully a new signing with Fletcher as backup is a decent pool to choose from.

Not necessarily. If we play a similar formation, Mata could well be in the front three. Basically none of us know what LvG is planning and I doubt he has signed Di Maria as Mata's replacement, they both offer different things.
Yeah, I guess. Well, I certainly hope you both are right.

Anyway, I've stopped being a Grinch on this now. I'm fully aboard the muppet train now. Looking past the fee, I just can't wait to see him in United colours with the #7 shirt on his back.

I thought Valencia did alright yesterday tbh. Real problem was lack of control in the match in midfield and front 3 not clicking.

Wingbacks aren't exactly expected to bomb up the flanks, dribble past their men and create chances like a winger in this formation. Though it can help if they do obviously. See the Dutch team and Juventus even for example. They are supplementary attackers who need to be solid defensively. He was solid particularly 2nd half and created our goal.

We can upgrade on him, though we have Rafael as well but still CM has to be foremost concern.

No, but they can be expected to take a man on when they have a chance. Valencia was shocking yesterday. The one time he took the man on he created the goal.

The real quesiton is though whether overpaying for Di maria was worth it without addressing our main problem areas particularly midfield or would buying a quality CM and CB improved us more especially given our new formation. You say this and 5 people jump up telling you How good Di Maria is.

If we have a 200 million warchest and gonna spend more then no problem, but if we don't and this is it then LVG has laid his bed. He should hope for Herrera and Carrick to stay injury free along with our defenders and/or change formation and keep them cotton wooled or make it work how SAF did. No excuses. Or if he can sign 2nd/3rd tier midfielders and make it work then so be it.

We desperately needed a midfielder when instead RvP was signed, yet we Went on to win the League and RvP dominated for us. Di Maria is the same situation, not the most critical area to strengthen but, when world class talent is available you simply have to go out and get it.

By the way, with Di Maria, we can move to a christmas tree formation and play him in the left side of midfield, where he excelled last season and for Benfica too.

Journos get their share of transfer stories wrong, not just Balague. Didn't Mitten suggest United were confident about signing Hummels? The Falcao story was strange though.

Mitten said that we were most advanced with Hummels as he was open to a move. Guess after the WC and with him about to become the Dortmund Captain, he didn't want to move later or Dortmund didn't wanna sell for anything less than a crazy price and he didn't want to force it.

Ballague seems to have a link with Jorge Mendes and his clients of some sort from the things he gets right. Falcao is his client as well so maybe he was deliberately fed wrong info there to generate interest. Dunno that was strange.

Nothing wrong what Cech is saying tbh, I found it quite funny.

It will be either Blind or De Jong surely ? Signing both seems strange.

They play their roles differently but both their best positions is as the #6.
