So according to balague thats 8m euros net or £230k pw (£120k a/tax) for DiMaria. Are we supposed to have agreed the fee with Madrid then?

For all we know we still don't have a wide player that Van Gaal actually rates and if you think that Fletcher is a good partner for him then let's just say agree to disagree. It's not knee jerk, it's finally that people realise that this squad still needs atleast 2 players to have a good chance for top4.

Woodward briefed the press with sayings like 5 more Matas in the summer and even held an interview that shareholders've been told that they should expect alot more movement in the transfermarket. He didn't get anywhere. Fergie never, ever said that a squad couldn't challenge for the title and mounted pressure on Gill, because certain deals haven't happened.

Is it so hard to be realistic? He managed one deal in this transfer window, as Herrera and Shaw seem to have been done before, and that was even just the option B to Vermaelen. But yeah call me knee jerk, I think you guys should be more realistic.
The Glazers out thing is a total kneejerk. Will go away as soon as they win a few games

The Glazers out is a kneejerk and I've never said that, although I want them totally out. But that we are subpar ATM and Woodward failed to deliver the goods again, after all this talk from him, isn't

I know, I agree with what you said. But I was calling a lot of the ''Ed has done nothing'' ''Glazers out'' stuff as a kneejerk, when as the previous poster says, we have actually spent nearly 80m this Summer in three positions. Ed has failed to deliver though, I agree.

I'd rather see di Maria utilised in a similar role to the one he is used in at Madrid. That role extracts the most from his strongest attributes and he has his best season to date when deployed there.

I'm worried that we've spent £72m on players that don't massively and immediately improve us. If we still go for Vidal or Di Maria plus (hopefully) another defender, the spending would be around £150m in one window!

Well what was our reported warchest at the start of the window? Don't get the problem here? What is more concerning is our inability to get rid of more deadwood.

That's what it needed to be. We've made 3 good signings but we need another good defender and midfielder. We could do with a winger as well but it's not a necessity.

If we got Di Maria and even a relatively cheap, safe option in midfield (like De Jong) we would be well sorted though.

He had Bale and Ronaldo playing ahead of him though. If we get him (which is a big if) we really should play him out wide.
In Madrid's system, he has the freedom to move out wide to the space Ronaldo vacated when moving centrally. If we either have someone drifting in from the left or the width predominantly provided by Shaw, he can still move into the wide areas and pose a threat from there, while also offering dynamism and work-rate where it is needed in the middle.

I personally think he would be a major success if used in that manor here, but the question is accommodating him and Rooney, Mata, etc, that brings out the best in the team. I'm intrigued at seeing how we would fair with the diamond and playing quite narrow, but still possessing plenty of pace and off-the-ball movement with di Maria and Welbeck.

Could work.

He was playing in the role Mata plays for us though bit differently.

He was the most advanced of a midfield three, but not an outright #10 like Mata is for us. Subsequently he has some of his very best performances in said position including his MOTM display against Atletico in the Champions League final.

I don't think the players' roles were that similar at all, even if it seems that way on paper.

Yeah, he was playing as a more defensive 10 compared to Mata but gave great attacking output in that role as well drifting wide left and interchanging with Ronaldo.

But it was still with 2 CM's behind him and a # 10 role played differently.

Well obviously, but we can't just 'get' Di Maria. Can't see that deal happening and can't see many alternatives. I think we're just splashing the cash in positions that obviously need filling without putting much thought in to it. £72m is a lot of money when you look at the players we've bought.

Don't get me wrong, Herrera and Shaw are excellent buys and I'm sure Rojo will be to.

Just don't know what 'space' we're supposed to be watching...

Well actually, we could just go out and get Di Maria. Real Madrid is clearly looking to sell him and we (or PSG) just need to pay up and we'll get him. Simple as that IMO. Ancelotti's comments combined with Perez's clear intents on selling him means we just need to reach their asking price. The only problem is whether we are willing to pay the £50m required to get him, which we really should be but we'll see.

That is what I am thinking, I would like a good option of an attacking 4-3-3 and we need an attacking player on the right to do it.

Luckily I think LVG and most of us want that option as well....we'll have to see what Ed does.

Why do nutters continue to report that Balotelli is going to be sold by Milan for ridiculous fees like 10-12 million? It's as if some of these journalists and media outlets are pissed when they write this bollocks.

Milan have pretty much been trying to sell Balotelli all summer. Those fees seem to be around what Milan would accept (as the window has gone on, the reported asking price has gone down) but nobody's paying it.

Can't see Liverpool going anywhere near him. Rodgers has been clear about finding the right person as well as the player and Balotelli will never be the right person for any dressing room.

Are Milan really that broke that they need to sell the one player who's worth paying a ticket for?

Wouldn't believe everything you read mate. Milan are in no serious rush to sell and there's no chance they'll do it in the region of some of the fees being banded about. Balotelli is 24 years old, has 3 years left on his contract and is Italy's top striker. I'll eat twenty hats if he goes as cheap as 15 million euros.

Almost sad to see how far them and Inter have fallen.. Serie A in general. We think we've got it bad..these 2 teams only have enough money to make players like Vidic their main signing

What is going on in Serie A these days? I haven't been following.

i know di maria seems available and we should be in for him and all that jazz, but are there not more glaring gaps we need to address seeing how we dont actually have unlimited funds? we still have no defensive midfielder and while we have lots of potential in defence we seriously need a top top CB to build from the back with.

i want di maria as much as the next man but bulk buying any and all attacking options is what led us to unbalance upfront.

Obviously di maria or nothing is a no brainer, but say it was a choice between Benatia + a Defensive midfielder or Di maria, i know what i would choose.

He'll be to us what Arjen Robben has been to Bayern.

Inter and AC Milan not making the champions league, in 5th and 8th spot respectively...and not really looking to improve this season.

Juventus finishing ~15 points above 2nd place Roma and 50 points ahead of AC Milan with a squad that may have only just been good enough for 3rd or 4th spot 10 years ago. On the other hand, overall attendance hasn't fallen that far behind in the last 10 years.
