I meant that the club wouldn't pay such a sum for a player purely to fill a hole in our reserve team. A lot more sensible to promote a youngster.

They were bought with first team in mind, the other person was suggesting that we spent that money on a player for the u21s.

I doubt Utd would ever "fill a hole in our reserve team" for any fee. Those places are precious and no player would be there without Utd having a genuine hope that they might one day make the first team. Some would be longer odds than others to make it but none would be signed if the coach's thought they never had a chance.
United have a history of paying largish fees for youngsters, who dont make it with them in the end. The likes of McGinty, Lee Martin, Greame Tomlison, etc. Its not a new thing. Sometimes you take a chance and it comes off but sometimes it doesnt
