I hear Strootman is actually just an average player, with fairly limited ability.
Dont know why there is so much hype over him.

Of course he is - most 23 year olds who play regularly for Holland are average.

He's probably about half-way between this and the hyped-up reputation he has on the caf. He's more than average, but there are definitely much better options out there.

Maybe those who hype about him are the ones who actually watch him? Possibility.

There is a shitload of people who claim him as the next Roy Keane and want him as our main midfield signing. The majority of those will not have seen him play regularly, if at all. I remember a few Dutch lads on here saying he was a bit meh. I think it was on here, anyways.

Knowing the caf, I'm sure a good number of those hyping him and those putting him down haven't actually watched him that much.

And, as I said, the truth is almost always half-way in between, and that's about where I rate him.

I've seen him pay a couple of times for Holland and he looked pretty decent, but I haven't seen him on a consistent basis because he plays in a boring league.

You can never tell though. Most non-United fans I speak to still think Carrick is shit and overrated etc. If it happened, I would trust our scouts judgement. We wouldn't sign him if we didn't see something special.

I am from Holland, watched him a few times, have psv fans as friends, he is spurs/everton level atm. Unsure about him.

"warchest" and "marquee", how annoying are these terms.

Because posters on here like to take contrary positions on potential targets, there was a huge ******** over him last year and since then others are like meh he is shite or average at best which is equally as stupid.

And then there are those who don't understand the hype despite not seeing him play - and base the review on what others say. Not sure that is so much better...or what do you think ?

Clearly its better to expect a player to be decent until proven otherwise, waiting for them to show that they are a quality player before saying or assuming they are. Then you wont be dissappointed when you finally get to see them in action and Mark Van Bommel outshines him.

What I think is what Brightonian said in his post, he isn't world class but isn't average either and most likely the truth is somewhere in the middle.
I would take that to mean he is a good player with some potential.

Like I've mentioned before, I think we should be looking at proven, top bracket midfielders and not good players with potential.

Out of interest, do you watch him play regularly, are you excited at the prospect of signing him, or would you rather someone else?

I think we should move the judgement of Strootman to the Strootman thread.

I keep getting excited when I see this thread bumped.

Gareth Bale: "I've had offers from Manchester United & Real Madrid. If I leave Spurs, I would still like to stay in England."

Anyone know where that's coming from? It's on twitter now... I'm guessing it's bullshit.

No one - if not intoxicated - speaks in such explicit terms these days. Especially the average media "trained" Premier League footballer.

Doesn't mean he wants to join us. He might well want to stay in England but could be waiting on an offer from Chelsea/City.

That's if the quote is even true, which it most likely isn't.

Seen that as well. They could potentially spend between 200-300 million this Summer. They want to win the league so effectively need to sign an entire new team. If they get those plus Falcao they will still need another 5 players at least.

Also you can be sure Porto have tore Monaco's balls off over the price. I'd be surprised at anything less than £30 million each.

They're saying 70 million euros combined price for the two. Basically £30 million each, which is a bit more then expected for Moutinho and probably about right for Rodriguez.
