Trump/Russia/SDNY investigation

Giuliani quoted as saying he was paid for that Romanian letter. I am shocked.

And when Attorney General Jeff Sessions faced pressure to recuse himself, Trump enlisted McGahn to urge Sessions not to take that step. Sessions eventually did recuse himself, giving his deputy, Rod Rosenstein, the ultimate authority to appoint a special counsel.

But for McGahn, the President's order to fire Mueller was a bridge too far -- with the White House counsel refusing to follow through on the order, a person familiar with the matter told CNN. The New York Times first reported Trump's move to fire Mueller and McGahn's refusal to carry out the order.

Didn't know Trump actually gave the order which was refused

I find it interesting that Trump needs an attorney to carry out the firing for him. Anyone know the exact reason why? Just a case of needing a legal expert to formulate the documents with the correct wording? To do it without the counsel of a legal expert would leave Trump with too much exposure? Is it not in the Presidents remit to actually carry out such a task and following procedure have to be carried out by a certain position in the Administration?

I'd imagine it has to be done by someone within the judicial branch for separation of powers?

"The Counsel's Office also helps define the line between official and political activities, oversees executive appointments and judicial selection, handles Presidential pardons, reviews legislation and Presidential statements, and handles lawsuits against the President in his role as President, as well as serving as the White House contact for the Department of Justice.

The White House Counsel offers legal advice to the President, the Counsel in the President's official capacity but does not serve as the President's personal attorney. "

What has been the prevalent opinion here is that Mueller can only be fired by the acting AG.
I definitely am not an expert but as per the Saturday Night Massacre Nixon had to go through a number of people to get a special counsel fired that there must be some impediment to him doing it directly. Separation of powers is what I'd imagine as White House Counsel (McGahn's role) seems to be actually part of the justice dept.

Heard on AC360 that Mueller's report might not be madr public or huge parts redacted?
Also, if Trump fires Mueller and a Dem Congress reappoints him, Senate would need 60 votes to overrule Trump.

I'd be very surprised if the public got to see the whole thing but then part of me thinks this could be a watershed moment in history where we actually get to see the full picture so it actually sinks in just what Republican Americans allowed themselves to believe in.

I also highly doubt when it drops it'll do much on its own. Trump and co will say it exonerates him and decry everyone screaming at them with 'it's fake news'.

Trump also told Bloomberg he viewed the Russia investigation as “illegal”, and said he would “see what happens” if Mueller issued him with a subpoena to secure an interview.

“Great scholars” had said “there never should have been a special counsel”, the president was quoted as saying. The scholars were not immediately identified.
Jeff Sessions' job safe until the midterms, Trump says:

Let's hope this is Mueller's final salvo before the silent period begins after labor day.

You know this cnut will do the best imitation of Flipper ever since Flipper went off the air, at the slightest a whiff of an offer by Mueller.
He already has the flipper eyes in that photo -- just missing a Flipper smile which will come in time.

Will be interesting to see if we get new developments today as we are getting close to the 60 day cutoff period.

Much of the 60 days will beat eaten up by the 2nd Manafort trial which will continue to generate negative news, as well leaks that reporters generate stories from, so if Trump thinks he is going to get 2 months of silence, he's mistaken.

What's the 60 day cutoff period? The midterms?

Has Mueller said he'll stop for the midterms?

Its generally expected that Mueller will be sensitive to being perceived as influencing the elections, so he will not make any major announcement after Labor Day (next Monday) to avoid that perception. Not sure if its a rule, but it is generally expected.

He's even doing the flipper wave.

He's simply speculating that today is the final day before the so called quiet period begins....but that's just his speculation. He knows feck all otherwise it would've leaked by now.

I honestly don’t think Mueller is going to stop for the Midterms. He’s doing his job and I think his view of it will be that stopping to avoid embarrassment is an equally political action to not stopping.
