Trump/Russia/SDNY investigation

I'm surprised Manafort hasn't been bumped off already to be honest.

He's seventy years old, they could make it look like a heart attack or whatever and they'd have absolutely no consequences.
Russian assassins these days don't have that level of slyness. The KGB just ain't what it used to be.

Unfortunately for some of his enemies, its summer and walking around with a brolly will seem suspiciously off for an assassin.

Do staffers have that sort of power to hold someone in contempt?

They are acting on behalf of Nunes, who is technically still head of the committee, so the committee could theoretically hold Rosenstein in contempt for not providing whatever they are looking for. Its all obviously political.

fuuuuuukc this is dragging on, cmon Bob ffs
I bet they're waiting for the Singapore summit honeymoon period to die down so they can welcome Trump back home with some new investigation bombs. A nice courtesy, "while you were away..." sort of thing.

♪Cohen down, Cohen down, Cohen dowwwwwn♪

They need to get him on state charges as well so Trump can't pardon him.

Well he has to be judged guilty to be pardoned. If he is cooperating, he is going to give something in a sworn testimony before pleading to a lesser charge and standing trial for it.

There’s not much closer to a Trump who aren’t family members and you’d have to presume he would know more than most of them too. I’m sure Team Trump will be moving aggressively to protect Cohen now.

Nope. It just carries a presumption of guilt. You can pardon people without them even having been charged.

They’re no longer protected by the 5th Amendment though which is pretty huge.

Trump could pardon Cohen and then Cohen could be subpoenaed later down the line and have no excuse but to testify and could still be done for perjury.

That's the test I think. If they go full in behind him today then they still think theres hope. If the real anti-Cohen attacks start, then they know they're truly, truly fecked and are acting out of desperation.

I don't understand how the likes of Schumer, Pelosi, etc are not harping on this more now. That's why the public's perception of the investigation is moving more to side with Trump & Co, they're letting them control the narrative. They should ask themselves what the likes of Cruz, Rubio, etc would be saying and doing if this was happening to President Hillary's campaign manager and personal attorney.

Fantastic news. The tweet storm is going to be monumental.

The Dems are fecking useless at this stuff and have been since probably Bill Clinton. Say what you will about the Clintons, they know how to get down in the dirt and stick a knife in someone when necessary.

Instead most of the party will just stand around and watch the public slide towards Trumps narrative, while sighing about how messed up it all is.

This is the opposite of the lesson they should learn imo.

Clinton had no traction on Trump because the Clintons are just as dirty. She calls him pussy grabber, he brings up how she attacked the woman who accused Slick Willy of sexual harassment. Lose-lose for the Democrats if they follow the Clinton path to the dark side. Also the Clinton-Gore presidency is not aging well with its signature policies looking more short-sighted and self-serving as the years go by.

Rather they need to look at Obama and how he dominated Trump to get their battle plan for victory. Obama was all about passion and inspiration not playing down and dirty like Clintons. He might have failed to deliver on his promise of hope, but he sure made Trump look small-time and ignorant better than any of the 19 Republican candidates or Hilary.

The Democrats in the US are at their best when they're passionate and inspirational (JFK, RFK) and they are at their worst when they get down and dirty (LBJ, Clintons).

I understand trying to stay away from impeachment talk, especially early on, but how are more senior Dems not pushing this to attack Trump's character? It's low-hanging fruit, yes, but he's able to scream WITCH HUNT! with no one forcing him to respond to the very real fact that his campaign manager and now likely his personal attorney have been caught up in this. Being an inspirational leader doesn't mean you have to let him off the hook. This is major news and shouldn't be treated as anything less.

The high ground is great, until the other side push you off it and kick you to death in the gutter. Politics has never been purely inspirational, and funnily enough both JFK and RFK were perfectly capable of getting out the knives when required.

Obama did a great job of being inspirational and where did it get us exactly? A GOP administration, a GOP house and a GOP senate. Oh and so many state Republicans that at one point the bastards were only 1 state away from being able to call a constitutional convention.

Inspiration and hope is great, but if it’s all you have it can easily become conflated with weakness and shallow idealism. You don’t have to fight in the gutter, but you DO have to fight, otherwise the other side will just control the narrative and you lose anyway.

Not sure how you can blame that on the aspects of Obama that are inspirational. As I said there were many operational flaws in the Obama admin but his angle of passion and inspiration was not one of those flaws.

Anyway Obama never gained control over the DNC in 2008. The Clinton faction continued to control the DNC so the bolded could be blamed on the Clinton machine just as much as Obama because the Democrat party as an organization was very much still operating with the Clinton's direction.

As a group the Democrats simply need more backbone. If that's what you mean then I agree. Republicans blocked Obama's Supreme Court nomination for over a year. So the Democrats should have filibustered Gorsuch. But they lacked the resolve. They just need to stop compromising when the Republicans are not compromising. They have to be willing to use all the outdated parliamentary tricks that the Republicans use in Congress. But they don't need to blackmail, bully and play dirty the same way to project strength and power because it won't work. It will just backfire like how it did with Clinton trying to label Trump pussy-grabber when in her own history she attacked her husband's accusers publicly and played her dirty politics on them!
