Apparently the whatsapp messages were taken from his iCloud account. He didn't realise they were being backed up.
Whattsapp messages are encrypted in transit, so intercepted data is useless to hackers. Nothing is encrypted where messages are stored though. I.e. the users devices, the recipients devices, or anywhere they are backup up to.
Why would WhatsApp data (owned by facebook) be stored on icloud ? Or does WhatsApp have its own cloud storage ?
You can ask Whatsapp to back up conversations to device storage. I presume this got stored on his iPhone and subsequently backed up to iCloud.

I think the salient point is, if you're into dodgy shit, common messaging apps and social media are not going to protect you from the law. You'd think they would know that but, this lot seem to be a bunch of feckin idiots.
Haven't owned an iPhone in a while, but doesn't iCloud have the options to back up all your apps and their data? Dunno if this is ticked by default.
That gizmodo article is a bit daft by the way, NewYorker says the witnesses surrendered the messages to special counsel voluntarily.

The apps themselves didn't give Manafort away. The recipients of the messages and Mueller being able to get a court order to access Manafort's cloud data did. That's not on the apps.
There are apps that delete the message on both ends (once read) as well as encrypting the data as its sent. Just as well they were too thick to know about or use them.

Yes and even if they weren't too thick to figure that out, the fact that the recipients contacted the US authorities to provide them with Manafort's texts would've still gotten him in trouble. If he was smart, he would've done it Bin Ladin style by using word of mouth intermediaries and / or thumb drives.
It does make me wonder what's possible. These guys have stumbled into positions of power while fecking up left, right and center. Imagine if they really knew what they were doing? Some of those crazy conspiracy theories that I use to bat away are starting to look more and more likely...
Manafort is an old fart who's probably used to having other people lower down the food chain do things for him. It's not a surprise that he'd be a luddite with technology and not have a clue how to use secure communications.
