Trump/Russia/SDNY investigation

He can after the fact by which time all his dirty linen will be washed in public. Can he pardon him before this reaches open court?

He could if he was still President. It's highly likely though that there will be something that Cohen goes down for that will have serious implications for Trump too.

That's my point about all his dirty laundry being air out in public. If this make it to public trial then Trump is finished. That's why I said can he pardon him before it get's to trial. It's the only way he walks away from this as POTUS.

Trump cant pardon a person who is being investigated at a state level. Only federal -- thats why it was smart of Mueller.

Can't he just commute sentences instead of pardoning? What Bush did to help Libby, for instance.

Does he not know that Trump cant pardon his way out of a SDNY court? This IDGAFF attitude is odd.

The Southern District of New York falls under federal jurisdiction. The NY is a misnomer... It just means that in this region of NY, any crimes that are prosecutable under federal law would be assigned to this federal court. So Trump could pardon someone convicted here.

Now Mueller has been sharing information with Schneiderman, the Attorney General of NY State. If Schneiderman decides to proceed with charges for crimes committed in New York, that are prosecutable under NY State law, then Trump can't do shit.

Certain crimes can be prosecuted under both state and federal law. Normally, depending on the attention and profile of the case, either the state or the Feds can choose to prosecute. In this situation, the Feds turning over information to a state authority is unusual. But then again, without that failsafe, Trump has carte blanche to pardon whoever he wants.

It's being conducted at federal level. :(

Ffs :( I was fed fake news!

First of all he's not been charged with any crime. State or federal. He will be charged with both when he eventually is. Some crimes are only state level others are only federal level. They will be ran side by side.

money laundering, and threats of violence all state crimes and all can and will be most likely charged against him. There are also federal crimes that he can and most likely will be charged against with which are things like bank fraud.

The state of new York will do its own prosecution separate from the feds. He's in deep do do nothing to fret about.

EDIT : bank fraud is also state level.

Violating campaign laws is fed level

Thanks.

That gives it a new dimension for me, makes it a little harder to argue with from the Trump side of things.

The article last night about Trump's lawyers now considering the Cohen situation to be more of a threat than the Mueller investigation was pretty telling. If Cohen flips, he would be forced to reveal everything he knows about his history with Trump (for a reduced sentence). Since Mueller may reach a dead end with Manafort not wanting to flip, he may actually find what Cohen has to say to be far more fruitful since Trump and Cohen go back over a decade - and - Trump can't pardon his way out of this since Cohen likely has legal exposure in the state of NY, especially if Mueller has been working with Schneiderman's offices.

 That's a great way to think about this farce
It's literally like watching a political version of game of thrones. Look how they have tied stormy Daniels side plot to the Mueller main story. I don't even know if we are nearing the end or if we have a few more plot twist yet to come
