Ah relax you big fanny, it's only natural to compare a show this good with other great ones.

Yeah there's loads of filler in BB, Hank and his minerals, pretty much anything involving Walt Jr or Marie. Also the newsroom plot of the Wire may not have been great, but it's definitely not filler. It was the plot.

I'm not sure you can say Breaking Bad was devoid of filler. Fly, for example, despite being great TV, was all filler. Gilligan said it himself. Then were was Marie's thievery, Skylar's subplots, basically that entire stupid season two plot with the silly ending. There was shitloads of filler, it just (for the most part) delivered brilliantly. I don't mind filler as long as it's still enjoyable TV. Pine Barrens in The Sopranos is one of the best episodes of TV ever and that's basically filler too.

I'll admit that Marie's thievery was a bit pointlessb (thankfully it wasn't dragged out,) but I think Skylar's situation was fairly integral in portraying the worsening state of Walt's marriage. Hank's story was also significant, as it gave us am idea of the man who we all knew would come up against Walt at some point. As far as the end of season 2, are you referring to the plane crash? I don't think it was the best writing, but again it was related to Walt and Jesse, as the father was affected by his daughter's situation, in turn leading to the crash. As I said, that's more of a writing issue than a case of needless filler. It's like Kashmir: some people think it's a Zep masterpiece; others think it's pretentious garbage. However, I've never heard anyone dismiss it as filler, unlike a song such as Boogie With Stu. I also wasn't a big fan of Fly, but it did offer a pretty stark view of Walt's meticulousness, and to some extent, his hardheadedness, something that would take on a much more vicious form in later seasons.

Bad writing may be a better way to address the newsroom angle in The Wire. I thought it was very disappointing, but it was certainly part of the story Simon was trying to tell, so probably not the best example of filler.

Finally, I would in no way describe Pine Barrens as filler. The Paulie/Christopher story gave us significant insight into two important supporting players and how trustworthy they were for Tony (Christopher impressing; Paulie disappointing.) As well, Tony's situation with Gloria took a crucial turn in that episode.

Don't read the link if you don't want to read theories on Episode 8. It's a nice enough write up.

Spoiler Contains speculation about Episode 8
Maggie asking Cohle to give assurances about Marty's safety does bring a nice loop. She knew the cult (or her dad was a part of it) but she tries to keep Marty out of it for his safety. Also could explain why she ultimately broke up Rusty and Marty's partnership, although Marty was doing a pretty darn good job by himself. She could have also made a deal with the cult to let her daughter be freed from abuse too. These are wild speculations that I don't buy yet.

Only got around to watching this series when episode 6 was aired and now finished with all of them. Absolutely love this show too bad it's almost over again.

The music choice of this show is btw absolutely awesome.

It's brilliant. Been watching it over the past couple of nights. Will watch epsiodes 6 & 7 tonight and the finale tomorrow. I've been nerdily reading through the thread page by page after I've watched each episode.

We're almost there

Yeah, I'm working tomorrow, but would consider waiting up for the finale of this if there was a good place to stream it live.

Best single season of television ever produced.

Jesus, I nearly welled up during this scene.

Oh come on. You mean you didn't feel anything when he went through the caves? Come on man.

I see what you are saying. My missus was expecting a much more explosive ending
and felt it was a bit flat that one not so bright guy could cause all that.
He didn't though. Like Rust said, he was only one part of it, those men in the video still weren't caught.

Hmmm.
I agree about him being a part of something evil. The Yellow King wasn't really a person, but more of a role which was possibly played by multiple people, and the place being abandoned kind of shows that Errol was the last remaining remnant of the evil which has consumed itself. The disappointment however was a good/great detective like Cohle was outwitted in the end by a guy like Errol for so long. You could obviously argue that back in '95, he had the support of Childress/Tuttle gang. Overall, I was satisfied that there were no crazy howitzer theories about the show and it was kept simple but people who have gotten used to twists could be left disappointed.

Pretty much like all finales, come short of expectations, but I still thought it was an excellent episode. Really intense all the way through, edge of the seat stuff. Sometimes it's better to just keep it simple, none of the crazy theories, and that's what they did.

What an excellent season though, they couldn't do anything to improve it overall IMO.

Mostly good. Quite a few things near the end I wasn't keen on, though I like that they didn't manage to expose the whole conspiracy.

So who was the guy tied to the bed...did Errol refer to him as daddy?

It was his dad wasn't it? Can't remember his name, I think it was Brian something? The guy who they were searching up and everything, that's how they found the house.

Edit: weird that this automatically spoilers this when I answer a spoiler, even though neither need to be in spoilers as it's aired already.
And the guys last name is Childress. So yeah, Errol's dad.

Can someone explain that green paint thing. How did they link green ears to the house being painted green? And what was the big deal if the house was painted?

Can't be disappointed if I already made myself ready for an episode where all the questions were never gonna be fully answered. I just feel a little meh about the story's conclusion but impressed by Matthew and Woody's acting.

I'm happy with how it went down, it was especially nice to get another grim Marty/Rust car conversation. Like all great shows the ending will always seem a bit flat, because getting there and the tension of not knowing is the most enjoyable aspect of it.

The way Marty wasn't interested in the case's details delivered to him by Papania and Gilbough when on his bed at the hospital represents what the show wasn't really about. Solving the murders and answering every question about the conspiracy has never been a priority.

Is Season two a completely different story?

Or will the two detectives continue to investigate where Rust and Marty left off?

It was reportedly pitched to have a different cast and story with each series, but things could easily change.

Then they shouldn't have built it up like it was.

I don't disagree, I feel a bit unsatisfied. I am not saying all the bad guys had to be arrested for the story to be complete, I can't really put to my words what I feel. All that stuff with Marty's daughter was a waste of time too.
