Television True Detective | Season 2 Spoilers

I want to be Cohle when i grow up.

ahhh... yeeh.

Nice episode, lots of closing dots, slowly paced, but getting closer to where we all want to get. The last 3 episodes gonna be epic.

In the teaser for the 7th episode, Marty gets real pissed off with some of the papers that Rust shows him.

1. Either he sees pictures/mention of his daughter being abused

Or

2. Beth is being used by the Yellow King/Man with the scars to keep tabs on Marty

And the re-union scene was very well underplayed, no unnecessary drama. Lot of asses in the episode

Good stuff. I wish I'd had a drink to spit out for "If you get the opportunity you should kill yourself".

Bit of a shame they had to go and make Maggie crazy, though Rust mowing Marty's lawn was inevitable.

Maggie's arse is a thing of beauty.

Best show on TV in years- makes Breaking Bad look crap. Just hope they don't chop and change directors and writers for series 2 seen as we are already losing McConaughey and Harrelson.

This is better than Breaking Bad, for me. To tell the truth, I was never part of the whole "Breaking Bad is the best ever" group. It's pretty damn good, but it's not The Wire or Game of Thrones. This... this is.

I have no idea if this has any relevance or importance but isn't this Rust's truck outside the bar at the beginning of the episode?

Another great episode, This is easily some of the best TV iv seen. If the last 2 episodes match the first 6 then it's surely one of the greatest debut seasons ever.

Wish people would stop comparing it to other shows. This is just 8 episodes and out; it's almost like a film. While shows like BB or The Wire have to sustain the narrative for 5-6 season. No way you can compare the two formats.

Very good point and I was just about to post that.

Yep. It was pretty obvious from the get go. Just as it was obvious Marty was banging that clerk and Tuttle was a villain from the first time you saw them in episode 1. Like the writer says, the show isn't trying to trick you. You're not going to get extra fan points for noticing these thing, it's just playing them out expertly.

This gives me the most reassurance it wont dissapoint. It's not a Broadchurch style "lets make it the least likely person and obfuscate everything to keep suspense" whodunnit. I don't think it's going to throw us a curve ball. There is a conspiracy, it involves the church and a big man with scars on his face, Rust & Marty will get back together to solve it. Lets just see it done well.

Maggie's motivations didn't bother me, only that she dropped Rust in it. It wouldn't have taken much to at least say she threw herself at him. Especially if her purpose is to goad Marty. The way she did it seemed to be wilfully pitting them against each other.

The only other tiny thing that bothered me was the "slow minor key classical piano music in a mental asylum" trope which seemed a bit naff for such a good show musically. Tiny nitpik though, and absolved by the great version of "Sign of the Judgment" at the end.

It is a matter of taste but I've been surprised by people who think B.B is the best ever.

They already told us that Tuttle is going to die. The interesting part is going to be how, who does it (well, out of the two), and what was the whole deal with the murders.

Refreshing to have a show that is good because it is good, not because it tries to come up with an outrageous reveal.

I thought he was bullshitting us but episode after episode I've realized that he was just being honest. It's better like this IMHO, the usual whodunnit shows can get tedious when you go from one suspect to another.

Completely. I like a twist or a game changer as much as the next guy but it can also get tedious when fans insist on trying to solve things themselves in the most convoluted screencap happy way possible or insist you can't truly appreciate something unless you're au fait with an obscure piece of surrealist literature. This really isn't a show about a crime as much as it's a show about the detectives themselves. Hence the name. Right there in the title, not trying to fool you.

 f'kin ell yeah. That was brutal.

Aside from that it was definitely the weakest episode so far. No real advance in to the main plot and really just an hour dedicated to the relationship breakdown which every man and his dog had guessed 4 episodes ago. Turns out that Marty's cash was a "down payment" after all, the scumbag.

Anyone else think the grumpy grey haired old fecker under Vondas @ the station is going to be in on it? I'm not even sure what his job is supposed to be. Anyone?

Oh and what's with all the BB comparisons? I've noticed this little ripple of post BB revisionism starting to spread around the internet. It comes across as a bit pathetic tbh.

Definitely, he's the Commander of the police force.

Good episode, it was always going to be hard to keep up with the previous 2 episodes so I wasn't too surprised it slowed down and wasn't quite as good.Hopefully they stick the landing with the last 2 episodes, certainly a lot to get through. Starting to wonder if there's actually anything going to happen with Hart's daughter too, they've clearly hinted at that, but it would seem a bit odd given the other cases if they let her live, whilst she wouldn't have any connection to the school either which is where the story seems to be going.

Regardless of that I can't see how its going to have a "happy ending" for Rust, the corruption seems to go right up to the top so even if he does find damning evidence I can't see it getting anywhere.

It's often just the usual contrarian responses. Even if people didn't get into Breaking Bad its clearly an excellently plotted show with amazing character development. True Detective has of course the benefit of having 8 episodes to just throw the entire story in, but then Breaking Bad had the ability to flesh out more than just its 2 main characters and of course the transformaiton of Walter White. As much as i've loved True Detective, I still don't think anythings quite reached the level of the ending of half measures for example.

Calling it "pathetic" and "revisionism" is honestly just silly. This is a discussion forum, and Breaking Bad is a TV series that recently ended and that has been called the best in TV. Obviously there are going to be comparisons.

You've got to realize your post loses any meaning when you start it out by basically accusing people of not liking it just to be "contrarian" and because it's, what, too mainstream? Even if you weren't referring to any people in this thread, it only serves to set people against your argument.

Breaking Bad was certainly a very good show, but I could name several that were just that tier better for me. That doesn't diminish it.

The discussion doesn't bother me, regardless of what you consider to be the merits of comparing art (it's shit like that that makes the Oscars so cringeworthy).

What I think is slightly pathetic is all of a sudden people coming out the woodwork to proclaim BB as 'not actually all that' now that it's finished. You could certainly say the ending was a bit flat but it was a fantastic show, as is The Wire and GoT.

People were saying it when it was going on as well, they just weren't paid attention to. Many were probably also sitting on the fence while the show was still going. I doubt there are that many people out there who have decided to hate it just to hate it.
