I don't think they had too much competition for the players they signed. Plus, some of them like Bonucci wanted to stay in Italy.

It depends on the context, if you are a professional athletes 28 isn't necessarily young. In Cycling you are almost a baby, in Gymnastic you are an antiquity, in football you are supposed to be in your absolute prime.
