I was listening to David Amoyal (Di Marzio's English translator)'s interview with Phil Brown (host of Malachians*) on Amoyal's podcast last night, and there were a few interesting tidbits. I'm bored as heck, so figured I'd transcribe the United-related portions.
On Morata:
Amoyal: So let’s talk about some potential acquisitions that could join him (Lindelof) at United. So let’s start up front with the striker position. I think Ibrahimovic’s injury kind of changed the plans a little bit. I had a feeling they were probably going to bring in a striker anyway. So tell me what do you see Man united doing up front with the striker position?
Brown: Oohh that’s a really really good question, and I’m not certain United know the answer to that themselves. The preference was Belotti over Morata. Belotti, however, was a much harder deal to do, in that Torino were not willing to budge at all on the transfer fee and transfer valuation of him, and were not willing to do payments and stuff like that. So United shifted their focus to Morata. United have talked to about 20-25 players this summer, hence the reason they’re linked with so many people, and it makes its way into the media – and fans don’t know what’s going on. They’ve been working on plan A and plan B lists for a long time because they didn’t know what tournament they were gonna be in. It seems to me it’s going to be either one of Belotti or Morata, but just simply because Morata is someone Mourinho brought through at Madrid. He knows him; he knows how he plays. We know Morata wasn’t their first choice, but I’m not sure he’s a terrible plan B….There’s no reason why United should be dragging that deal out though. I was exchanging emails with Ed Woodward this morning (June 29th) – and he was in New Zealand last week of course – he didn’t want to say why; I think it was something to do with the Lions tour, but he seemed a little bit snippier than normal let’s just say. So I’m not sure if United’s window so far is going too well.
A: Interesting, yeah I agree with you on Belotti. The reason Torino put that exit clause for 100mil was to make it hard for him to leave, that’s the bottom-line. Belotti agreed to it – he got a nice raise. I think from his perspective staying at Torino one more season the year before the world cup – he’s only 23 or 24, If I had to bet I think it’s going to be Morata, and I think United fans will be really happy when they see him play.
On Fabinho
A: So Fabinho has become the new Pogba for me. The difference is with Pogba I actually saw him play a ton and I actually knew a lot what was going on with the deal. With Fabinho – you know we don’t cover the premier league full-time as I like to say. We’ve had reports of Manchester United being interested. Of course the French press and the English press are gonna have a lot more info on it. So from your perspective do you think Fabinho to Manchester United is realistic, or do you see some other midfielders coming in? Do you see him as a potential acquisition or someone else?
B: I do, along with Matic as well. I think it’s very very risky to replace Michael Carrick with Nemanja Matic and to leave it at that. If Matic gets injured it leaves United really exposed. So it wouldn’t surprise me to see United to go with two defensive midfielders this summer, and make sure they’re not exposed. As I’ve said before that is the key position to get the best out of a 90million pound Rolls-Royce in Paul Pogba. So for me, it wouldn’t surprise me if Fabinho’s available for a decent fee – not a bank-breaking fee – of course United have done lots of business with Monaco. United definitely met with Mendes and a couple other people relating to Fabinho a couple weeks ago, so there’s legitimate interest.Whether United end up signing him or not – United aren’t the only club that are interested in him. United have definitely spoke to him, and are definitely interested. It seems strange to me. I understand that Ed Woodward’s job is not to just rush in and throw money around, but this is a desperate situation for United, and unlike previous coaches, if Ed Woodward doesn’t get the players that Mourinho’s asking for, he is heading for a disaster with Mourinho. I could actually see Mourinho resigning from United if Ed Woodward didn’t get him the players that he asked for.
