Why not? They will be playing more games next season and need squad depth. Apart from Kante and Bakayoko, they'd only have Matic and Fabregas as options in midfield.
They have CL this season and both play different roles.

Ah I see. Presumably he just meant that our targets, in order of priority, were 1)Bakayoko, 2)Dier, 3)Matic and that we worked systematically through the list. Matic "has now emerged as United's priority target" for the holding midfield position, because the names above him on the list have been ruled out. At least that's how I read it.

Our net spend (cliché, I know) has been low the last few years, and it looks like we finally might be on the rise. Now is the time to invest in the squad, so we should take full advantage of this opportunity. We're also looking to sell Sakho, Moreno and Markovic for around £50m combined from what I've heard, so that's extra income as well.

Fair enough, I really didn't think your budget would be close to 200m and I only really thought about Moreno (who I can't see you getting much for) and Markovic. I think you can get a reasonable fee for Sakho, but I think you might be a bit off the 50m mark.
Make sense to pump some money in now though, I hope you squander it all mind you

This was obviously correct but since it was a negative towards signing Fabinho then it got jumped on.

Was always the most likely signing, but £40m is a LOT for him I think when nobody else is after him and he's seemingly being ejected from Chelsea.

Yeah I think we should just pay them the damn money, same goes for VVD if we are still in with a chance of getting him too. No point boasting through the press at the start of the window that we have all this money and are looking to break our transfer record a few times if we are then gonna baulk when clubs put our words to the test. Keita is a cracking player and at only 22 lots of room for improvement so I wouldn't mind too much if we had to pay through the nose for him. Strengthening the defence is top priority though and if we have to pay more for VVD now after fecking about like a bunch of amateurs earlier in the window then we deserve it.
Without sounding too much like a giddy transfer numpty* i do find it abit disconcerting that everyone we have been linked to this summer (lindelof, morata, perisic, and now matic) no other team seems to be remotely interested. Would be nice to feel like we've won in a trace to sign some fecker some other fecker wants.

And to think some people said Monaco would want a lot for Fabinho.... the mind boggles hope we get both in rather than just Matic.
Or other clubs were interested but deals with the players to join Utd were made months ago?
Why would it be price dependant, when our transfer budget isnt a problem and you believe yourself there are younger , similar and better players available....who would probably cost the same or less?
I'd be happy with Fabinho or Matic, in that order. Fabinho is younger and arguably has the higher ceiling, whilst Matic is more limited but experienced and should have no issues settling in. And it wouldn't hurt if he scored a few screamers like the one he scored against Spurs in the FA Cup along the way.
£40m for Matic is terrible business, sorry.
I have probably seen around 10 Monaco games and for me, he is a good central midfielder, does actually have a similar style of movement to Viera but is nowhere near the Viera of Arsenals level, in fact I think he is over rated....but still good, and more importantly, for me he is better as a right back which is why I think he would be a really good signing
