So matic has emerged as our top target because we failed to sign Dier and our top target in bakayoko?
I am a bit surprised people are shocked that Jose would be after Matic. It' almost a no brainer. Jose pulled the stops to get Matic back to Chelsea (I think that started the trend of spending big to get ex players back into a team) and he made him the fulcrum of his title winning team back then. He totally trusted Matic and he probably still does. I never believed he blamed Matic for the outcome of his last disastrous season at Stamford Bridge. Surely, he must have known that the problem was way beyond one player.
Also, Jose has always believed that form is temporary while class is permanent. That's why he always tries to 'revive' players when he gets to clubs. Popular examples are his attempts at getting John Terry back to his best when he returned to Chelsea (a successful venture) and Wayne Rooney when he got to United (a failed venture). I am guessing he believes he can get Matic back to his best and if he succeeds at doing that, United would be having one heck of a player considering how good Matic can be at his best.
As relevant as the debate about Matic's quality is in here (and the debate can go on forever with each side submitting valid arguements), I think what ultimately matters is the kind of squad Jose is trying to build and the type of player profiles he wants to execute his plans. Jose is very Euro-centric in his approach to football management. I have said this before, in national football side terms, Jose would be the coach of Germany rather than Brazil. Germany will win with efficiency, precision, organisation, hardwork, planning and pin-point execution. Brazil will win with skill, flair and samba. The last Germany team that won the world cup had no Lionel Messi or Neymar. But they had Lahm, Muller, Kroos and Bastian, players who could deliver efficiently and with ruthless precision. That's Jose's preference. You always thought he would manage a Cristiano Ronaldo rather than a Lionel Messi and you always thought he would prefer a Matic or a Dier to a Fabinho. I do think he could go for both Matic and Fabinho though but if he had to pick one, I suspect it would be the Serbian unless Chelsea make it too difficult, in financial terms, to sign him.
