Transfer Tweets - Summer 2017 | Keep it on topic

You need squad players like Darmian. It's a long season, competing on multiple fronts. It's not possible to have world class backups riding your bench (unless you're currently Madrid, but that will pass) in every position.

Not a huge deal if Darmian is sold, but don't underestimate is value to a team like United in a larger sense. I'd rather get rid of Young for example.

Jose likes him. I find a lot of posters on the Cafe cant get over certain players that Jose values like Fellaini and Darmian. They have complained about a potential one in Perisic and he hasnt even joined yet.

€15m today is like 2 quid two years ago. That Tancredi tweet is a joke.

Darmian proved at that he's a very good player when used to his limits and that's what Jose did. LVG was forcing him to keep going forward and making his crap crosses but Jose decided to play on his defensive attributes only. Jose always loves to have a defensive full back in his side and that's why we'll keep Darmian.

It also proves why we are getting a player like Perisic to cover the left flank back and forth and cover the inability of Darmian to go forward.

Great post!

So you're implying Damien is set to be our main left back next season?

Changed it for you. Anyway, yes, I won't be surprised if we start the season with Darmian in LB. He has performed rather well in the last month of our season, and was crucial in our Europa win. Even if we get a better LB, Darmian is able to provide good cover for both FB slots, and even play in a 3 man CB formation when asked to.

Maybe, unless Shaw proved himself which I doubt.

Maybe we should move the discussion to another thread before Damien got mad and close the thread on us ? :D

Personally I think Shaw would prove himself. For all his criticism, Mourinho clearly rates him as a player and that positive talk at the end of the season suggested wel see a new Luke Shaw from there on. It's more his fitness that concerns me than him adapting to mourinho.

But yeah, if Shaw is chronically injured again I can see Darmien as LB. I don't think we are basing Perisic on that. Perisic is just a sorely needed traditional winger that we appear to be lacking regardless of whose supporting from behind.

I'l stop there as I'm derailing a twitter thread, sorry.

He shouldn't be a starter but he's fine as a squad player, same goes for the other players you've listed. I'm not sure how fair it is to call them mediocre but we certainly wouldn't be able to attract much better for our bench.

Mediocre in terms of what/where we want/need to be. I also disagree with them as bench options though. Do you seriously believe that those players would be getting bench time at other top clubs. They would be ideal for the Premier 2nd tier clubs, like Schneiderlin at Everton but not for United, not if we're really serious about mounting genuine challenges at home and in Europe.

That's a prehistoric way to set up a wing, we'd essentially have 2 positions used up to do the job of one player. Darmian isn't good enough if we want to have any potency from our left side next season, he's Watford level at best. People keep talking about Jose loving a defensive fullback but the fact is Azpi was decent enough past the halfway line, he was levels and levels above Darmian as an overall player.

The beauty.

See rumour that might not be true at all from a questionable source.

Use that as confirmation bias for whatever views one needs to spout out. Agenda posting at its finest .
Because players can't wait to go all out on social networks saying how they snubbed some club because they don't fancy certain style of football?

Take Mbappe for example, even tho it's just a rumor can you imagine him joining us only to be played out of position in an counter-attacking side?
Who was played out of position for us?

I find the fact that they don't realise the futility of their agenda more frustrating than the erroneous nature of the argument itself. It's not as if the decision makers check the caf in order to get feedback or form an opinion on Jose.

They believe if they stick to their delusion that they will garner enough support to turn everyone against him. If there were any basis for the claim that "good/top" players don't sign for Jose then there would be merit in that opinion, however, the reality is completely different.
I just hope that their misery is prolonged by Jose being a massive success here that he's here for a long time.

Him and us both need that stability.

Did you watch the last few months of the season or nah? He can play both flanks and CB at a pinch. Jose wont get rid of him easily.

6 weeks out of 2 years where he wasn't bad to awful doesn't really change my opinion on him. He still offered nothing going forward despite looking better defensively.

He's 28 this year and 15m euro would be recouping what we paid for him, despite him being 2 years older and having a bad few years. As i said it's a good deal for all parties.

Think he's decent backup at both LB and RB for the defensive fullback role or when we're ahead. For 15m is not worth it IMO as he can cover 2 positions.

I don't see the point in exclusively defensive fullbacks. United have the resources to have 4 good fullbacks in the squad that are proficient in both halves of a fullbacks job. No one would be happy with a fullback who couldn't defend and didn't even make an effort to.

15m is a great price, recouping what we bought him for.

wasnt awful first few months, stop white washing the lad.

Not necessarily but most other top clubs have their fair share of seemingly average players too. Obviously Madrid, Bayern and the like are on a different level but we're not even close to them right now.

I'd be absolutely delighted to sell Darmian for basically what we paid. Obviously Jose likes defensive full backs, but he makes Azpilicueta and Ivanovic look like Marcelo and Dani Alves.

slow news day today, not much happening in terms of transfer rumours

Everyone's out enjoying the sun. Tomorrow is a Monday and most European internationals will be done (except for France V England on Tuesday) so you would expect things to start kicking off tomorrow.

Players particularly must hate the prospect of going away on holiday without knowing where they'll be living and playing in 2 months, for the next 4 or 5 years. I would.

Im happy with the Lindelof signing and if we could get Fabinho then we would have a great start to our summer transfer business. As regards attacking additions, I don't have a real preference from one to another tbh as I haven't seen much of each player that has been linked to us. I would like to see us sign one of Sanchez, Douglas Costa or Lucas Moura but doesn't seem we're after them.

During the latter part of the season, Darmian played what you would describe a role somewhere between a left back and a central defender.
