Well we can hold on to him seeing that he has Euros to worry about next season and would be really insane to not act professionally or play up his best. What we have done is basically bend over for Madrid, again! Two months earlier or now. It does not change the fact and we now don't even have time to get in a replacement for whom we would not be fleeced seeing that it is the last two days of the window.
By holding out until next summer giving us time to find a quality replacement. We spend over £20mil on a loan for Falcao last summer. Losing the same amount to keep DDG another season would be a far better use of money.
Madrid were never going to pay an insane fee for someone whose contract expires next year. We should've either accepted their bid earlier this summer or stood our stance and let him go for free next year.

So the two points being made are that (1) we should keep him and let him go on a free and that (2) we dont have enough time to get a replacement.

(1) No way we could keep him, he wanted out and helped engineer the move by making it clear he wasn't going to sign a contract and only wanted to go to Madrid. Completely weakened our position and whatever was said behind closed doors convinced LVG that he couldn't rely on him for matches. Compare that to how Ronaldo handled his exit, stayed one more year, signed a new contract and then went for a world record fee. Not saying DDG should have done the same but it just shows how much weaker United's bargaining position was due to his actions.

(2) In terms of getting a replacement, I am sure we'll have someone ready to come in. Probably Cillisen, maybe Navas but no doubt we wont have Romero as number 1 keeper, expecially after the second goal against Swansea. We probably were resigned to the fact DDG was going for a long time and had replacements sounded out.

To suggest this saga was amateurish really ignores the fact that DDG and Madrid had us over a barrel.

Is it him????

Definitely him

its idiotic if not amateurish

You dont keep a situation like this to the last moment in the hope of an extra quid or two. Especially a freaking goalkeeper, a hole much harder to fill than most
I think the world and his dog knew that DDG was going, this is not a surprising move. I'm sure we've been scouting keepers and probably have a deal in place for this eventuality.

This transfer window is like a good night out. You start off with few shots....that makes you feel wonderful....but the longer the night lasts the more likely you are to wake up hangovered...with someones piss on your jacket...and street cleaner ushering you from a pavement.
You call that a good night out?

That would be the sensible thing for us to do. We're strangers to that logic lately.

How is it amateurish? DDG never had any intention of staying and if reports are true Madrid are offering him less than we did, you cant compete with that. How can United realistically do better than hold out to the last minute in the hope of an insane bid from Madrid?

United could have used a little commonsense, and recognized that if Navas is good enough for us as an, albeit inferior, De Gea replacement, he was good enough for Real to put between the posts for a season until they could pick up De Gea for nothing.

That would require some understanding of how football works though.

So, our attacking options are Rooney (29), Wilson (20), Young (30), Mata (27), Depay (21) and Martial (19). In what world does this attacking unit win anything?

We've gotten rid off di Maria, van Perise, Nani, Hernandez, Falcao, Januzaj.

All of which have been excellent this last 1-2 years? That what you are telling us?

Getting dicked over by Ramos, selling Di Maria when he had 4 years on his contract, screwing up the Pedro deal and bending over backwards to Real for De Gea. What a great window.

Ramos was getting a new contract, nearly everyone wanted ADM gone, not in for Pedro and DDG??? you read/believe too many newspapers - gullible's travels
