I haven't got the time to name every player that might be labelled "marquee".

Incidentally, what's your definition of a marquee player?
I'd regard a marquee signing as someone who arrives with a big reputation, big price tag and gives real excitement to the fans. Now obviously certain players tick some of the boxes better than others but I'd certainly regard the prior mentioned 4 as marquee signings. Would you not call RVP a marquee signing at the time?

From what I can remember, DDG was still struggling before the 2013-14 season. Although he was improving, he was still having difficulty with crosses and the physicality of the Premiership. I might be wrong but I can't remember United offering him a new contract in 2014.
But to be fair, how would we know if we'd offered him a new contract or not?
We only really announce stuff like that when they've signed the contract don't we? Everything else is usually media speculation

We should have him under contract though.

I'm sure they didn't just forget to offer him one, as quiet as he is, he obviously wants out. And while it isn't a crime to want away he has shown zero loyalty to us, so why should we do him any favours. We do what's best for us, if that's sell him or keep him, then so be it.

We should have had him sign a 5 year contract in late 2012 or 2013. There is no excuse, it's poor management to have this situation.

Struggling or not that's beside the point, he was very expensive and an asset that we wouldn't just let deprciate.

Who knows mate, but either way he would most likely still want to go, the only difference would be is we would have a stronger hand (obviously)

No excuse, except for the obvious one of the guy not wanting to sign a contract. God knows how long Real and him have been in contact. Maybe he just used us to go to Real instead of causing war by moving across the city, there are many many possible reasons apart from it being United's fault.

So halfway through the 2012/13 as soon as we got him playing well why didn't we add years onto his contract? You can't tell me Real Madrid has his head turned over 2 years ago. Obviously, I don't know the full story but we don't know the full story behind anything unless we are high up in that club every day. From our point of view, it looks bad that we haven't managed to get a player to extent his contract who has been playing unreal for nearly 30 months now.

There is no "or" letting de gea go this late in the window is not in united best interest, getting another year out of him is.

Still think that once september 1st comes he's only fecking himself over by not playing

Maybe, it is late, but just hope whatever is in his head that makes the manager keep him in the stands passes.

I think you definition is very good but in all honesty, I'm not sure about RVP, Berbatov or even Costa.

Although he had enormous talent with Arsenal he also had the habit of under-performing and long periods injured. I remember when we bought him Arsenal fans used to say to me that we were buying a player that would only play one month in a season. I used to live only a few streets away from Highbury then. He had one good season with United and once he got a Premiership winners medal he reverted to his old habits.

Berbatov was an enigma. With enormous talent but couldn't perform at the highest levels. I wouldn't call either a "marguee" signings.

Its not a point worth arguing or discussing as that just me personal evaluation of these players.

We can't just add to his contract without him signing it. And if he doesn't want to sign it there is nothing we can do. Like you say we don't know yet you presume it's the clubs fault, which is illogical.

Yeh fair enough, think the biggest difference in our interpretations is I think a player can be a marquee signing regardless of how his career turns out. So for Di Maria I'd still class him as one even though he didn't deliver at all.

If that's the case then its still United's fault as they should have sold him last season. Maybe De Gea might ultimately reflect as Ronaldo did that United was like a family, Real are like a business.

What I really find distasteful about De Gea is that United made him the player he is today. If he really wanted to leave for Real then he could have come to an agreement with United that he would sign an extension if they agreed to sell him this summer. That way he would have been sold to Madrid and United would have got a good price for him.

Di Maria is certainly a marquee player.

even though they are getting desperate I don't blame them, jose sees a problem in the squad and he wants to fix it because he wants to win title.

United do though. It was for this reason that Real got Beckham very cheaply. Presently, Chicharito is also in the last year of his contract with United not showing any signs of offering him a new one.

Surprised they haven't gone for Laporte. Similar price to what they've offered for Stones and would have to pay for Marquinhos. I wish we'd fecking sign him.

The move for Stones is dead, Abdennour is going to Valencia. Garay is still possible.

You should apply for a job in accounts.

Mendes isn't in a position to 'push through' anything, either Madrid cough up with an acceptable fee or he stays. There's nothing more to it.

This - if Mendes wants to push this through then he needs to get his arse to Madrid and tell Perez to stop pissing-out and offer the price we've set. It's not that hard to get this done, and it's not our side that needs pushing here.

Why don't Chelsea go in for Laporte? He's just as good as Stones and Marquinhos and will cost around the same amount? Hope to god they don't, mind.

Lambert, Balotelli, Markovic - Brentan is not faring particularly well over the past 12 months.

Lambert was worth a punt as squad player and at least Lovren is still there but spending £40m and then deciding Ballotelli/Markovic aren't even worthy of a squad place is unforgivable, especially as an owner who's invested the money. Surprised Rodgers isn't really having to answer for it.
