No he didn't. He said Ramos wanted to join us, and that Real were the sticking point. He said about Thiago that were were close enough to offer a contract.
Which was clear BS..he wanted a new contract yet people bought it like crazy..if anyone had thought about it logically , the fact that a player that had been at Madrid for 10 years and was a la decima hero, and the next succeeding captain would leave Madrid for a side deep in transition like us made zero sense because of contract negotiations disagreements ..Even Ballague said the same in the beginning of this whole saga but as people didnt want to believe him, he got mocked even though he was right all along..

Things like this at the beginning were red warning flags that people chose to ignore. It was all about a contract which the Ramos brothers eventually did get..If you want to leave and the only club you want to join is United, you refuse any contract, not continue negotiating.

Losing De Gea isn't as bad as first thought to be honest. Now that the defence is much more organised, hopefully the reliability on a world class keeper is lower that it was (Would still love him to be our keeper though)

Still, I believe we need solid quality in goal down the road with the prospect of facing perhaps Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern, Juventus or even PSG should we reach deeper in the CL elimination rounds whenever that comes. In those tight matches against higher or similar caliber teams, this is where individual quality might have to shine from every single position, including a goalkeeper's.

3 weeks or so back(around the time Romero was linked with us), Romero was the worst keeper we could buy and he was poor at best and couldn't play well at any lower level club. Now even his harshest (if that's a word) critics have retracted their words to 'have been very good till now'.

Initially the consensus was Cillessen is average to good at best but Romero is just poor. Now there are cries of 'I'd rather keep Romero'. That's mourinho-esque in a way

So moral of the story, even if we think we know how a player plays, frans hoek and LvG knows better than any of us so if they think Cillessen is good, he must be.

I think Hoek has a fair amount of input into stuff like this. Seems very good and van Gaal evidently trusts him a lot.

If they think Cillessen is the one, I back their judgement.

The reaction to Cillessen everytime he's mentioned on here is hilarious.

Since Van Gaal arrived we've removed:

Macheda (free), Ferdinand (free), Vidic (free, but not exactly Van Gaals doing), Giggs (retired), Evra (1.5m), Bebe (2.4m), Kagawa (7m), Welbeck (16m), Lawrence (1m), Keane (3m), Fletcher (free), Zaha (6m), Anderson (free), Cleverley (free), Amos (free), Nani (4.25m), RVP (4.2m), Di Maria (44.1m), Rafael (2.5m), Henriquez (1.2m) and Evans (6+2m)

I don't think there's a single player there that I want back. Only debatable one is possibly Di Maria. Di Maria was very talented but his attitude was rotten.

We may have sold a lot of them for a small fee, but that's still a lot of deadwood gone in 2 years. Van Gaal's done brilliantly.

Agreed

Yeah exactly. its not as if he has bought every Tom dick or Harry he worked with in Holland so it's daft that a lot of people assume he is bought only because lvg knows him.

Absolutely agree. Chuck another million in there for Reece James too.

That's incredible. If De Gea goes, then from SAF's time we'll only really be left with Smalling and Rooney in the starting 11, perhaps Carrick.

We are pretty much a deadwood-free zone now. This is great for dressing room morale plus it gives young players a much better chance of breaking through.

I'd have Rafael and RVP back (unless we sign someone else) from that lot, but the fact I've only got two quibbles (and have been proved wrong about WelbecK) is outstanding from LVG.

It sure is. romero was even worse that it was sad. He was abused by a lot of people for no fault of his own and I'm happy he is shutting all of them up with his performances.

Absolutely. Probably just a couple more I reckon he'd get rid of if he could but some of these may depart before Tuesday...Valdes, Lindegaard, Powell. I also think if he had enough cover he'd let Hernandez go but that's probably unlikely now.

A very good and much needed clear out though.

Poor buttner is always forgotten even though he was MOTM on his debut :p

Well, tbh, he hasn't had to do much.

He made some good saves whenever he was asked to against Spurs and against brugge. He had that mistake against brugge In the first leg but that's normal for any keeper other than neuer ddg and courtois. Cech lloris all had mistakes in their games till now too and all are favourites here for ddg replacement

Couple good saves against Spurs yeah, but the Brugge one was more the striker being shit. Credit to Romero for stopping it but still.

Who are the strikers who are attainable right now?
In Spain, their must be some who have reasonable buyouts.
Griezmann for example would be perfect, can play anywhere in an attacking role.

Is Aubameyang a potential target? or Lewandowski

So... Berahino wants out of West Brom... news that Evans is having a medical at West Brom... now reports we'll be getting a new striker in the same day as Evans having a medical? Coincidence?
