I'm not blaming him at all? I'm saying he hasn't been tested in 5 games so we don't know how good he is, but when it comes to having the ball at his feet, Cillessen is better.

I think we might just have to wait until a top keeper is available. If he does buy Cillessen I wonder if that means LVG doesn't fancy Hugo Lloris.

For those scared of the Jasper Cillessen signing I would recommend watching the Frans Hoek training video which was posted on this site with him coaching the goal keepers at spurs. For me, if this guy thinks Cillessen is good enough that's enough for me as his attention to detail and perfectionism is beyond reproach. If Cillessen isn;t good enough now then with Hoek's knowledge of the player and expertise he could become quite a player.

He hasn't been tested imo, we haven't exactly gone up against the best the prem or europe can offer.

Of course he's been fine so far. I've yet to see how he handles some of the shots de gea was dealing with last year.

He saved from the best in the world cup. I'm not saying he's the perfect choice but he can't do more than he has. I still believe he was bought as back-up to another goal-keeper once DDG goes.

Whoever that guy is, he can go feck himself with Cillesen; I just don't rate him at all. Between him and Romero, I would also stick with Romero's 6'3" height.
He's 6ft3? Always comes across as a small keeper to me like Casillas on screen.

Has Peter Schmeichel gave his thoughts on Cillessen? He's always spot on with who he thinks is good enough for us and who isnt in terms of keepers.

People's whole opinion will be formed at the fact he was taken off for a penalty shootout in the World cup.
I imagine it's more to do with him constantly punching the ball, batting it away and generally looking more of a shot stopper than a keeper who is going to be good under the high ball and who has a presence in the penalty box (at the WC).

VDS said a few weeks ago that he isnt good enough for United or something like that. Thats good enough for me.

The whole "It's just because he was took off for the penalty shootout" bullshit being trotted out is as tiresome as "If his name was foreign you'd want him" line used to further agendas to back any possible transfer. I've seen Cillessen play plenty of times and Brophs is spot on with why he's a poor choice for us, even an Ajax fan who watches them live has posted about how average he is, but apparently some refuse to accept that he'd be being bought for the wrong reasons.

Van der Sar works for Ajax, he said he wouldn't be surprised if Manchester United were interested in Cillessen. He said he wouldn't like it if we made an offer for him as he would prefer him to stay where he is and that he's very impressed with the personal improvement Cillessen has made. He never said he wasn't good enough.

So just over an inch's difference? Negligible really.

For what it's worth, I don't think we will sign Cillessen but if LVG thinks he's the right man then I trust his judgement entirely.

Like you would do with a boxer, you have to count both height and arm reach. With that regard, Romero still holds a good advantage over Cillesen, especially when this particular league focuses on aerial play like no other. Even if we have the best goalkeeping coach in the world, that doesn't make up for physical disadvantage against some Neandertals in the Premier League.

For all you idiots on here who have formed your opinion on Cillisen purely because LVG took him off for the penos may I remind you the best keeper ever Peter Schmeichel has a woeful PK record.
Except for that one wonderful game :D what a difference that one spot kick made.

Probably misleading headline.

Think some people will be pleasantly surprised when Cillessen turns out to be a good buy. He has similar strengths and weaknesses to the De Gea we bought a few years back. Yes, he's obviously a downgrade on De Gea but everyone bar Neuer is in my opinion.

He's excellent with his feet, and I mean moving them too, and he's pretty good rushing out to snuff any danger. He's decisive and composed, and a decent shot stopper, although not as agile as De Gea. His biggest weakness is something that De Gea struggled with upon his move to England, although he's a lot stockier than the Spaniard was, he still has a tendency to punch rather than catch.

For our game, he's an ideal 'keeper, just as De Gea was. He won't dominate a penalty box or command his defence particularly forcefully, but he is an excellent sweeper 'keeper, with good distribution and decent reflexes. We need a 'keeper to protect us from counter attacks, it's unlikely that we'll ever be under siege from a barrage of crosses or constant pressure. At the modest fee he will command, I think it would be decent business. Romero has shown that he is capable and comfortable as a number two, and he'll push Cillessen to perform. It is a process.

Well, that's it then. So much for the unfulfilled potential of someone who was supposed to be Rio and Vidic's best uderstudy.
Was good in 08/09 and in 2012 and 13. Poor in between and since. People always had doubts about whether he was good enough rather than see him as a reliable defender for lengthy periods of time.
