Of course it's about playing time. I think though, that the longer we haggle over his (bargain) price, the more chance his mates will convince him to stay.

I actually think the deal's pretty much done. Expect it to be done by the weekend. If not, then I'd be inclined to think we're not that interested.

Yeah I understand that and do agree, BUT we are going to have to spend money to get that replacement.
Just think it is WIN WIN for RM and LOSE LOSE for United.
A lot can happen in a year. Madrid can loose another title to Barcelona and we can do good in PL or CL or both.
Of course next summer is a win win for Madrid but important thing is its not this summer.

I can't fathom this logic. Honestly, what is an extra £20M to United? It's nothing. The truth is, if we are going to have any chance of winning the title then de Gea has to be a pivotal sand decisive player for ys like he was last year. He will more than make up that £20-odd million over the course of the season.

Furthermore, whoever we sign is an instant downgrade on de Gea. We would rather see better players than a slightly healthier back balance. There is no loser in this deal, Madrid get a world class keeper on a free next year. We get to keep said world class player for an extra year and have a full year to line-up a replacement.

DDG leaving is inevitable. If it's not this year, it's next. We may as well extract as much time out of him as possible.

so they just wait till January sign him for next summer for free.
Glad he is staying but we are going to lose him for nothing.
De Gea for another year is worth more to utd right now.

Alot more, he's been so huge for us last two years. to me this has always been the best move since day one. Keep him for a year and let him go on a free.

It's actually a win for United since we don't have any obvious match winner, a focused De Gea will be crucial if we are to challenge on all three fronts, without him we can forget about the later stages of the champions league and our title challenge will likely be weak.

Real Madrid get a win in the sense they don't need to spend the money but they also lose because it means 1 championship in 7 seasons could turn into 1 in 8, Barcelona are going to be hard to stop.

You're not the 1st to think that Von - this stand-off over the £22m fee is becoming pathetic & risky that he'll change his mind.

Put it like this - Pedro feels under-valued at Barca & wants to leave, but for all his pedigree - United dont think he's worth £22m either. Double kick in the teeth for him right there.

He must be quite rightly f*cked off altogether by all of this & we're risking him telling United to f*ck off & signing for someone else..

Fortunately, United would rather keep him than get a measly amount for world class keeper worth confortably more than the reported fee, regardless of just one year left in his contract.

That's a sports decision not an economical one, because economically that's a disastrous deal.

But I perfectly understand it.

From what I understand the difference between finishing 4th and 2nd is £4m, look at how we played against Spurs it takes van Gaal a while to get going, this is normal, it is no coincidence he hasn't performed that great in champions league group stages before, if De Gea turns out to be the difference between getting knocked out in the group stages or making it to the quarter final that's another £9m.

I'm not saying De Gea will win that much money for us but going on the previous two seasons and a new team that's integrating it is possible he could be such a big difference, getting knocked out of the group stages or failing to mount a title challenge has future consequences of its own, not just the less prize money but also it means we might have to pay even more for the best talent as the weakest english champions league team or even struggle to attract players who would rather go to clubs where they are sure they will challenge for trophies, if we can sign the best talent then that helps us commercially.

A lot of factors go into this, if the finance team have calculated we would be much better off challenging for trophies than not (but still getting champions league), I can see why they say no to £20m - £25m, especially when you consider had De Gea signed a new contract we would pay him £200k per week, that's what we value him at, we have a £200k per week player this season for £75k per week, that's £6.5m less in salary we are paying him.

I can see why the club are saying no to a fee under £30m. The Moyes season cost us a lot of money (Deloitte estimated £50m for not being in the champions league alone), we want to sign another world class player but none seem available, it would be unwise to let one of our few quality players go especially after Angel di Maria left.

Indeed, I know people tend to think that this sort of thing doesn't happen, and of course, we don't know that the reports are correct, but if he has a low £22m buyout agreement and we're still haggling, then potentially another club could show they value him more, or his Barca buddies could convince him to stay.

we don't need him.

Pedro is a better winger and we don't need anymore no.10's. City don't even need him either and feck throwing 46m/228k a week at a player we don't need.

Bollocks do we not need him. Pedro is a better winger ok, and all our 10s are not as good IMO. Mata, Rooney etc not as good as DeBruyne at 10. He would be better than Mata on the right or through the middle.
Pedro and DeBruyne in, Young and Mata to the bench.
Also City do need him, hes a massive upgrade on Nasri or Navas

That's one year profit, a lot.
Not quite: this would only be true if keeping DDG for another season had no intrinsic value.

Short term, he may contribute towards team success equivalent to millions; we get a few more months to look for a successor.

Longer term, we set a precedence that if you want one of our better players, you better be willing to pay real money. I think it is worth keeping him just to establish this precedence. It will make arrogant p****s like Perez think twice before they target one of our stars.

That's actually a very good point. Not something I brought into the equation at all.

Yeah and not just for a year. He would already be on 200k per week last season if he would sign so this doubles the money we saved.
