Surely LVG told him in May that he was not needed. I am guessing he is going to stay as he would have left by now.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if we don't make any big moves for a CB at this point. The CB's LVG wanted are either unavailable, don't want to be here, or too expensive. The Ramos play was as much a strategem to keep DDG (or at least capitalize on a DDG transfer as much as possible), so I was never very optimistic about it anyway.
In this, I am in agreement with LVG. There is enough talent there, it just has to develop & stay healthy. A Hummels or Ramos would improve the play, but they aren't coming, while I've been rather unsure of Otamendi from the start, especially at the price mentioned. Of course, if the price for Otamendi came down, I can see us doing a deal, so what LVG said also serves as a negotiating ploy, but I honestly think LVG is happy enough with what we have already defensively.

We need quality, no time to mess about like we have in the past. Smalling and Jones are good players but the pair, particularly the latter, can not be relied on. Evans is an average centre back and Rojo has it still all to prove. Then you've got unproven talent like McNair and Blackett, however the latter clearly isn't good enough (yet). We need a better centre back to partner Smalling.
You can show all the stats from last season showing how good our defence was but you just had to watch the match to see how shaky our defence was and how many times Dave bailed them out.

Entirely plausible this could happen. Valdes and LVG have always had a tempestuous relationship. To be honest, given the alternatives on the market, I'd be content with Valdes as No.1
He's taken a bag of trainers and a United tie into Ikea and had a member of staff picture him in front of some flat pack wardrobes if you ask me.

Beginning to think Van Gaal's rant was a device to light a fire under Valdes. If he was really going to be sold, he would probably not be asked to continue training since he didn't previously have much of a role in any case.
