The problem is most fans are blinded by the excitement of a new signing and Ed seems sometimes that he acts like a fan or is desperate to appease to them. Otamendi is Di Maria all over as far as I am concerned. He had one great season, does not fit the profile of what we do and how we play and will cost a ridiculous amount. But just because there is the established narrative that our defence is the worst thing that has ever existed, he somehow became the perfect transfer target.
Well, our defense was really awful last season, and Otamendi is significantly better than any defender we have.

He isn't Hummels on ball playing ability, but he is an improvement on Jones and especially Smalling on that aspect. He hasn't been our first choice (from all reports Hummels was our main target and now is Ramos), but if we don't sign him, then who? Obviously we can go for some young defender like Laporte (who IMO is better than anything we have and has potential to become the best CB in the world) or Stones (who has potential to become one of the best CB in the world) but the last time we went into that direction it didn't end well, and currently we need more an experienced defender (although not a world beater) more than someone who has world class potential, but at the moment wouldn't improve our defense that much.

notice how open Blanc is about things compared to LVG's "it's a process".

ha ha, half the haters hate Van Gaal for talking too much, and the other half hate him for not talking enough.

Let's say "nope, we want £60m now". They'll have to stump up, or they'll look rather silly.

Alternatively, we could have a player who does not want to play for United, who's value could take a dramatic plunge if he has another mediocre season.

There is so much wrong with this post I dont know where to begin. Firstly why assume Otamendi will be like ADM, what because they are both Argentinian? Don't you think that if Otamendi is a legitimate target that we would have been scouting him as far back as his Porto days..maybe even when he was at Sarsfield.

As for Woodward, I think you have got caught up in the social media narrative about him. Outside of Di Maria he hasnt spent anywhere approaching those kind of figures on anyone. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but anyone would have mortgaged on ADM being gold at the start of last season.

Back to Otamendi. I believe he would fit our style in so much that he is likely to be as comfortable on the ball as Jones/Smalling plus the added benefit of his physical style. Ramos if he was the prime target possesses a hard edge and its been widely known that we are/were interested in him.

So there I was having a peaceful stroll around central today, wearing my favourite PSG shirt. When I passed a guy who looked at me disgust and anger, really felt like smacking him.

Was in central earlier today and there looked to be a fight brewing between this guy in a PSG shirt and another bloke.

The fee has been agreed, that's why he's so confident and nothing is going to fall through on the contract side because the cowardly gremlin faced prick is desperate to leave.

Otamendi is a fecking defender, their style is usually pretty irrelevant and could be disconnected from how the entire side plays because their impact on offensive play is limited. It's hardly the case that a defender does not fit in despite his ability because his style differs from the style of the team, if they're good then they are good. It's different with midfielders and attackers because someone who plays different brand of football will always be left out isolated and a misfit.

It matters if the manager keeps demanding his CB's bring the ball out into midfield and play cutting passes, like LvG does, and you're crap at it, like Smalling and Jones are. Otamendi is the same as them. I'd be all for us having our CB's play like Terry and Cahill and just defend, but LvG wants his philosophy so he should buy players that can play it.

To be fair van Gaal is weird in terms of what he expects his defenders to be. Otamendi being right footed is probably a huge drawback for him too. The weirdo.

I'll laugh if he fecks them around as well and refuses to go because they won't offer him £5m a day he's probably asking for.

Agreed, I thought the most important thing for a defender was to be good at defending, but he's anal about the details and it makes things more difficult than they need to be.

Yeah, they're defenders for a reason. If they were brilliant passers of a ball capable of playing with both their feet and excellent dribbles they'd probably be WPOTY.

The frustrating part is that he's not flexible about it. If he had the type of players to play the style he likes then fine, nothing wrong with it. However he doesn't, he has meat and potato defenders and should utilize them as such.

Schalke have turned down an £8.5m offer from Spurs for Leroy Sane, according to Kicker.
