Arsenal signing Cech for 11 million, Liverpool signing Clyne for 12.5. Will be interesting to see what we have up our sleeve to make us pass on such good deals.
How do you know we passed up on Cech?

Liverpool are strengthening pretty astutely, to give them credit.

Meanwhile, it seems like the papers have absolutely no idea who we're interested, what LVG is thinking or what our transfer strategy is.

Agree with the most part, but that certainly isn't testament to any players ability these past few years.

True, I guess my point was that being English or an English international tends to result in the player being more expensive.

I don't know for sure but there has been no suggestions from any reputable journalists that we were in the mix. I'm pretty sure he would have chosen us if given the choice and offered the same money.

They are the only Spanish outlet reporting this. Their reporting on this story has been out of sync with the rest of Spanish media from the start. I've seen nothing on their site saying Ramos asked to leave. All the salacious details were left out. This is hardly surprising because Marca is the least credible paper in existence when it comes to Real Madrid. They work for the club, pure and simple.

When El Pais, the country's most reputable broadsheet, the entirety of their media, and people like Sid Lowe are all saying Ramos wants out, and relations are at an all time low, that's what I would go with.

Once you fall out with Perez, there's no way back at Madrid. And Perez didn't even attend their last meeting. Ramos and Casillas will probably leave this summer.

Yeh especially with the home grown rules possibly being tightened, just long gone are the days where being an England international was the pinnacle of football for our lads.

His children are probably more important to him than money. Cech wanted to stay in London and that was reported from the outset.

That Diego Torres chap seems fairly convinced it will happen. Says Ramos is essential for United and it would be odd if it didn't pan out, as all interested parties want the same thing.

If Jones is offered a 80k, Otamendi will earn a lot more. And the fact that Madrid and City are interested in him makes it even more plausible.

Madrid and City aren't going to offer him amazing wages either though, because of the fee involved. He isn't going to earn any more than Pepe who's on £110k a week. Mangala also for instance was signed for £42m but "only" earns around £80k a week.

Seems like the window is hotting up now. Costa to Bayern is an interesting one, and Clyne would be a very good deal at 12 million for Liverpool. Their window is starting to look promising. If they can keep Sterling or get close to 50 million for him, they are on the right track.

They've already started to spend the Sterling money. No way do they sign a player for £29m in a position they are relatively well stocked in, without the deal already agreed in principle. Ings, Firmino, Milner & Clyne will be around £55m spent, which if they sell Sterling for £45m (with QPR receiving £9m) will probably give them another £20m to spend on a midfielder/defender.

Mangala is only a potential he won't earn much and Otamendi can drive the price up because of the interest around him, wherever he goes he will earn as much as Pepe, at least.
By the way the 7m were in Euros, I didn't precised it. And Ramos offer is supposed to be decreasing from 12m€ to 10m€.

How the hell have they got Clyne for £12.5m? I know they've already signed him replacement, but if that was us they'd still probably be demanding £25m!

Probably because :

(A) he has a year left on his contract
(B) he's a distinctly average right back
(C) there was no competition for his signature
(D) in 35 league appearances last season he provided 0 assists.

Milner, Firmino and Clyne will improve them big time. Good signings from the lot.

Clyne is a decent (read: average) right back, his impact will be minimal.

Firmino will need at least a season to settle and will be offset by the loss of Sterling. Overall it's a trade off that makes the weaker imo.

Milner is probably going to play as a CM in place of Gerrard. You gain some extra running, which they weren't short of in Henderson, but I'm not sure what else. Can/Lucas + Milner + Hendo is just...... Dull?

Erm, not sure what his age has to do with anything...didn't we sign RVP for £24 million who was older and had a year left too?

Clyne is a talented player and an England international - £12.5 million is a bargain no matter how you look at it. We should be in for him.
Clyne is as average as it can get. Being England international means feck all considering thow bad England has been in the last few years. Even then, Clyne has only 5 appearances competing for a spot with Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker.

tbf even though he is average he's still a huge upgrade on any rb they have.

I will not defend Clyne, but this has more to do with managers. Almost in every position they manage to pick the wrong player.

We paid a lot for Shaw because he was young, so its seen as an investment. Clyne isnt as young, thats why I brought his age up. RVP is an attacker, Clyne is a RB. Not only do attackers go for more than defenders, RVP was the best striker in the league in 2012. Add the rivalry between us and Arsenal into the mix and you can see why we paid 24m for him.

I just don't see how you think its a bargain to pay 12m for Clyne.

Considering the situation Clyne's in I completely agree for you, but in general decent English players go for ridiculous amounts, so £12m does look a bit low.

I think you're not meant to post from these lot, however, it's not a rumour. If mods want me to delete, then, please, just say so.

It must be universally know that United are easy to rip off.

I'd prefer to see Di Maria stay with us for at least another season because I do think he'll come good. If he did leave for that amount though, I don't think anyone could say we were ripped off. We signed him for a huge amount on the back of a world class season. To sell him and recoup what we spent after a more than underwhelming season would be good business.

As for Clyne, at 12million he is a great bargain for Liverpool. But we shouldn't be signing players of that calibre, just because they're going cheap. Any more than we should have gone for James McClean because West Brom got a bargain at 1.5mil. Let's aim higher and bring in either genuine promise in the 18-20 age bracket or else proven world class.
