Liverpool are strengthening pretty astutely, to give them credit.

Meanwhile, it seems like the papers have absolutely no idea who we're interested, what LVG is thinking or what our transfer strategy is.

No, they are setting themselves up to solidify their 8th to 5th place standing. They haven't brought anyone that will push them into the top 4.

Clyne is as average as it can get. Being England international means feck all considering thow bad England has been in the last few years. Even then, Clyne has only 5 appearances competing for a spot with Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker.

Thank you. Good post. The muppets get far too excited about transfers, any transfers. Jamie Vardy is now an Negland international FFS. Tom Cleverley is an England international. Clyne got left out of the last team for Jones at right back. He's as average as they come.

Caftards got their knickers in a twist when Spurs went all money bags a couple of seasons ago and signed Eriksen, Lamela, Chadli, Paulinho and Soldado. Looked good on paper, but they were all universally over rated with the exception of Eriksen, who proved to be a good deal.

Liverpool need world class additions along the spine of their team, and instead what they've signed are a legion of mid table players. 40m euors for Firmino is hilarious.

I presume it's the overall cost of the transfer. Ramos would probably cost £85-90m (based on around £35-40m + 200k a week) over 5 years, Otamendi would probably cost £55-60m (based on around £32m and 100k a week).
If that is the case, then it means that we'll spend 5m more for Ramos (for each year). If we assume that Ramos is the better player (I definitely think so, heck, one year ago Otamendi wasn't even a top 20 CB, while Ramos has been one of the best defenders - be it CB or RB - for almost a decade) then I think that we're better if we sign Ramos. He is also a leader, something that we desperately need for our quite young and inexperienced defense.

If we can manage to get Ramos for De Gea + 15m (or at most 20m) and don't pay him more than 180k/week or so, we would be doing good business.

While this isn't the thread for that, it seems to me that the wage bill is going batshit crazy high. With Rooney, RVP and Di Maria all being on north of 200k, while Mata is 150k, is it wise to sign an another player who will get more than 150k?

If we manage to keep de Gea it will be also about 200k, so it doesn't really matter. We just should not give a to long contract to Ramos.

What people are also forgetting about Liverpool is that they will lose Sterling soon and these signings so far will just about make up for losing his impact

Apparently this Lequipe article translates as Schweini being close to us but I still can't see it happening.....

Translation:

At Bayern since the age of 13, Schweinsteiger is going to leave the club. He still has a contract until June 2016, but the captain of the German team has stopped the negotiations for an extension, willing to accept the concrete offer from Man Utd. The English are willing to pay 25million Euro's.

Erm, not sure what his age has to do with anything...didn't we sign RVP for £24 million who was older and had a year left too?

Clyne is a talented player and an England international - £12.5 million is a bargain no matter how you look at it. We should be in for him.

RVP is a striker and was the best player in the league. £9m more for the difference is not bad.

If we get Ramos, I think that De Gea will go as part of the deal to Madrid.

If not, then I guess we'll keep De Gea on his cheapr wages (60k or so) for an another year, and then he would leave for free.

The most important thing is to sign one of Ramos/Otamendi ASAP. If Ramos deal takes too long and then he decides to stay there, it is quite likely that at the meantime City would get Otamendi, which would leave us in a very bad position for next season. We definitely need one of them (assuming that Hummels/Godin are impossible to get at this stage).

Wages just have to stay within a percentage of turnover <50%. Won't be a problem because revenue will be way up over the next few seasons.

Also consider we've recently gotten rid of big earners in Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra and Giggs. Not to mention decent earners in Fletcher, kagawa, Anderson, and Cleverley. Of Shaw, Blind, Herrera and Di Maria, only the latter is on big money.

Falcao has gone. That's 250k p/week off. Rvp is likely to follow; that's another 250k. Nani is out the door, minus 100k, offset by Depay. I imagine Evans, Rafael and De Gea will be gone too. So I see loads of spare capacity in the wage budget.

Interesting.. Replacing Moisander with Heitinga who has been absolutely shite for a while now, it's becoming a thing at ED topclubs that we need a few good experienced player amongst the many youngsters. Luckily PSV did well with Guardado, I'm not sure if Heitinga will have the same impact for Ajax.

I was more talking about contract extension, as we offered him a lot, so Ramos doesn't change a lot in that way (btw. I meant not to give a long contract to Ramos)

That transfer will drag out I reckon, hope he ends up here in the end.

I tend to agree. In terms of the wages we'll be fine though: the new Chevelot, Adidas and Premier League deals that are commencing over the next 3 seasons should boost our turnover by around £100m. Add into that the extra Champions League revenue that will be coming our way and you're probably looking at being able to comfortably sustain an additional £60m per year in wages (the equivalent of everyone getting a 30% pay rise).

It won't be long before the majority of our squad players are earning £150k a week and our star players are on £500k. Our wage bill will be over £300m by the turn of the decade, with our turnover well over double that.
