Barcelona were a indomitable force for 2 or 3 years of that. The rest of that time, they were a "normal" top club, the type of clubs we will be competing with ourselves. He has Barca to compete with
Barcelona have comfortably been a cut above anything that the Premiership has to offer for quite a while now. Even under Vilanova they got 100 points which is the highest number of points amassed in La Liga (only Madrid the year before them got the same amount) and got to the semis of the CL (and this was considered one of their poor seasons and when people began to talk of a decline which shows that even when their level began to drop, they were extremely competitive). The following season they challenged for the league until the last day, lost to CL finalists Atletico in the quarter finals of the CL and got to the final of the Copa del Ray and lost to double winners Madrid.Barcelona were a indomitable force for 2 or 3 years of that. I am not sure what is your point really. I never said Chelsea or City are as good as Barcelona. I said Barcelona had only 2 or 3 years when it was acceptable to just go "fair enough, they were something else". The other seasons they were poor by their standards but they were still a top team. I agree that their poor seasons were still very good for Chelsea or City but that's irrelevant to the point I am making which is simply that Real Madrid cannot claim they were facing an out of this world force of nature for 6 seasons straight to justify their failing.Barcelona have comfortably been a cut above anything that the Premiership has to offer for quite a while now. Those two seasons that I just described were considered poor for Barcelona which shows the high standards that they are used to (because those seasons would certainly not be considered poor by any Premiership club. Far from it in fact). In comparison, poor seasons by Chelsea and City in recent years has seen them drop out in the group stage of the CL (twice in City's cases) and not even challenge for the title. There has been nothing "normal" about Barcelona in recent years and if they are "normal", then City and Chelsea are shite in comparison.
The possibility of getting a player like Varane is why we need to hang on to DDG for as long as possible this window, any deal for him has to be done after, or as part of any deal we do for one of their players, the longer we hold out the more chance it could happen imo.
As soon as DDG goes all our bargaining power goes with him, and imo Real may well blink first because they know full well we can afford to keep him, and risk losing him for free if needs be.

It has been suggested to me that £35.5m represents City's last bid. Would already make Sterling world's most expensive teenager
The problem is that Real will probably just wait a season and sign De Gea on a free next season. If we start playing hardball too much, they're gonna just carry on with Casillias for one more season and then take Dave for nothing. As much as we want to get as good a deal as possible, I don't think that we are in the strongest postion to negotiate, especially in terms of trying to get someone like Varane.
i wonder why. genuine question.
Tbh i'd rather that then , if Real will only pay a fee way below his true value, or won't deal with any of their players then we may as well keep DDG.
There is a chance he could do something great for us that wins us a trophy, or gets us top 4 again which far outweighs any fee Real will give us now, plus a year is very long time, he may split with his girlfriend and decide Madrid isn't for him, or another keeper might take Madrid's fancy, you just never know.
Yeah I agree. Especially as someone like Varane is an absolute pipedream in my opinion.
Of course the Mail say we'd have to pay more for Fabinho.
You know how this works surely? Also you've missed out Gaitan, Sneijder and Garay. So potentially we could sign Fabinho, Felipe Anderson, Roberto Firmino , Schweinsteiger, Otamendi, Schneiderlin, Cillessen(?) all in one summer? I think we'll be putting in some youth players in the first team squad, to fill the home grown quota.
not forgetting a certain Ruud..Alves netted 45 goals in 39 games for Heerenveen and nobody heard of him ever since. Strikers that have done relatively well from Heerenveen are Huntelaar and now Dost in his breakthrough season (3d season at Wolfsburg).
Point is we made the mistake of losing him to Real when we went for Jones ahead of him. For me, Varane has a much higher ceiling than McNair who does not have Varane's calmness. McNair goes to bits as soon as he makes an error while Varane seems to have a very calm and mature head on his shoulders. If we have the chance to sign him, we should not let go of that chance just because we are worried about McNair's progress. You don't let go of the opportunity of signing such talents for someone like McNair.
This confirms it. Taylor's up there with the best. None of the journos really have any clue whatsoever about what we're up to.
That's what I read. At the time we signed Jones, Varane was also available and we could've easily got him. Chose to sign Jones instead.Er he turned us down! We didn't go for jones ahead of him.

My info on Man City and Patrick Roberts at Fulham is an initial £5m bid has been rejected - so still some way to go #mcfc #ffc
I can see this happening.Somehow, this will end up with us overpaying for Otamendi and underselling DDG while Mendes, Lim, and Florentino laugh themselves silly
