He signed an extension to 2020 less than a year ago - I don't see him moving & is he that far ahead of McNair? He had some poor Champions League games - we need experience.
Are you seriously asking if Varane is much better than McNair at the moment?

Much, much better. Varane is already one of the best defenders in the world.
That's a massive exaggeration. Although he is easily one of the best young centre backs in the world, there are a lot of defenders better than him at the moment, some of which include Pique, Ramos, Terry, Chiellini and yes, I believe even Smalling is currently better.

Not really. Those players you've mentioned are all better (except Smalling) plus a few more like Boateng, Otamendi, T. Silva, but after that you'd struggle to name a better defender than him. I reckon he'd easily make top 20. Regardless of age, he'd be our best defender if he came to United with only Smalling coming close to him.

Really? You don't think Smalling's better? Meh, personal opinions and all that, but I reckon Smalling has genuinely been one of the best centre backs in the world this season. Varane, not so much, although that may be because I don't watch him as much as Smalling.

Don't know who he is but seems to have a lot of saints fans following him. Would be pretty stupid if we're holding off on Schneiderlin for Schwinie.

Agreed, Schneiderlin is 6 years younger and Schweinsteiger should be seen as a bonus buy not the main buy.

I'd imagine any of our deals will be wrapped up quickly, I look forward to the morning I wake up to news of an imminent signing, today was not that day. Again.

I don't think Smalling is as good as Varane, no, but that's not slight on Smalling as I think he's also very good. Put it this way, if you had a chance to buy Varane or Smalling, I'm willing to bet the majority would rather have Varane.

Man United scout was furious with club for passing up chance to sign Axel Witsel. "It's incomprehensible." http://sportwitness.ning.com/forum/topics/after-signing-his-contract-with-man-united-player-dubbed-new-mess…

'Now Van Stijn thinks that Witsel can evolve from a defensive midfielder into a ball playing central defender and he made it clear how highly he rates him "I have always considered Witsel more of a central defender. A footballing one, one that advances with the ball at his feet, and will strengthen the midfield."

Van Stijn even compared Witsel to Beckenbauer and Baresi and said that in a more defensive position he could reach the summit of world football, although he still feels that can be the case as a midfielder. The Dutch scout is clearly a big fan of Witsel and he's never forgiven Manchester United for ignoring his pleas to sign the player.'
Errr... Alright then.

No. McNair was towering at Stamford Bridge, showed his enormous potential & I'd like to see McNair given the time & space to come through. With a young Varane in along side Smalling, this will stifle McNairs development.

Like I say, Varane was poor in some of those Champions League games. However we are not directly comparing the two as I acknowledge we need to replace Evans but we need to do this with an older head.

I don't believe Varane to be the player to partner Smalling. Otemendi is more the Vidic type player I'd much prefer. If Varane happens to be the only top CB we can get hold of, to replace Evans, clearly we'd bring him in.

McNair at Stamford Bridge showed enormous potential IMO. Varane can be one of the very best but he's not what we need now, unless we'd be relegating Smallin as well as Jones & getting 2 CB's in. Smalling needs an older head alongside him.

Varane had shockers against Schalke & Juventus - he's far from the finished article.

Varane is actually quite inconsistent, but his potential is immense. He seems to have poor games every now and then, not unusual for a young defender

Varane would be an upgrade to Smalling.
Who would you partner Varane with? To partner him with Smalling would be asking a lot IMO. We need an experience player in there. See how Hummels dominated Varane in the World Cup & he was less than convincing against Albania the other night - did you see that game?

Quite, my point put more concisely. We can't partner Varane & Smalling. He's at least as inconsistent as Smalling.

Agreed. I've watched him have some really bad games this year, like their 4-0 loss to Atletico in the derby for instance. He's a great talent, but we need someone who can step in and be a rock asap.
