Kane was levels above anything Andy Carrol ever was.

Fact is Kane will be overpriced. Comparisons to the Carroll deal is valid in that we'd over pay for him and he might have been a one season wonder. I do think he will go on to be a good striker but the price will be exorbitant for someone whose only had 1 good season

True but they would still improve us in the positions.

Smalling & Cahill at CB could be a solid partnership given Jonese injury record. Then there is Stones who has the potential to be a top CB.
Clyne would be an immediate improvement on Valencia at RB.
Kane last season and Sturridge in 13/14 would be huge additions to the squad. Berahino, like Stones has the potential.

Cahill has no place with our current system, he would not improve as at all.

I do agree with the rest (I am not sure about Stones, but fair enough).

Tottenham will not sell Harry Kane to Man Utd, even if a major bid comes in this summer, sources tell ESPN FC.

Zidane on Pogba: "I think he's fantastic. What I like about him is that he has everything. He's a complete player."

Pogba looks more a Madrid or City player to me than a Barcelona one.

Agreed. I'd much prefer Verratti if I was a Barcelona fan.

Busquets and Verrati together won't work that well though.

Pogba gives more in attacking sense and making things happen. Also adds physicality.

Though not sure who'd they drop Rakitic or Iniesta.

Louis van Gaal is close to signing Jan Cillessen as David de Gea's replacement:

Great start when they can't even spell his first name correctly.

If rumours are true and he's top of Frans Hoek's shortlist to replace De Gea then I think we need to trust van Gaal and Hoek on this one. Hoek worked closely with Cillessen during his time as goalkeeping coach for van Gaal's Netherlands side so he probably knows Cillessen inside out. Hoek is a very experienced and knowledgeable coach so if he wasn't good enough for United then I highly doubt he would put his name forward. van Gaal will know him well too of course.

We need someone better to partner Smalling than Cahill if we are to challenge. We have enough centre backs with potential at this stage regarding Stones. Valencia is better than Clyne imho and Berahino isn't as good as Welbeck who we sold or Hernandez who we still own and who can't get a place.

@MirrorAnderson
Am told by someone who knows that Liverpool are not interested in Inter Milan's Mateo Kovacic.

 Liverpool being 'not interested' in a player they've already bid for two or three times again.

I hope we don't pay the release clause as it'll set a precedent. United always seem to have to pay top dollar. I'd rather go for someone else if they make us pay that much for Otamendi. Not because it's a lot of money as we can afford it, but because otherwise other clubs will follow Valencia. Note Madrid, Bayern and Barca don't get fleeced with their transfers; why should we?

Bayern had to pay release clause for Gotze and Martinez, Madrid had to pay a lot to get Bale and James and also had to trigger significant release clause to get Danilo this year, Barcelona had to pay release clause to get Rakitic (still a bargain), Neymar, also in the past Alves, and paid a lot of money to get Suarez, not to mention other players that these clubs had signed for very high fees or had to trigger release clauses. Not sure what you're getting at here.

Why would Chelsea sell us Cahill?

You're not being serious, are you? We are the kings at overspending and getting our trousers pulled down with every other transfer.

You've mentioned release clauses for Gotze and Martinez, who were wanted by all the top clubs in Europe and Bayern got them for below or on pair for their value. Rakitic's release clause was pish. And Suarez and Neymar were worth every penny.

You've also missed the point entirely. It's not about not paying the release clause, it's about not paying over the odds due to clubs knowing we have a lot of money.

What worries me about this one is that we are in for him because he is Dutch and not because he is good. Now that DDG is seemingly off and Cech and Lloris don't seem to be very likely to me, we may be looking for what we can get. I don't know but I would almost rather give Valdes a chance than the see Cillessen here just because he's Dutch and LVG can get him.

I'm pretty sure, Cillessen is being looked at as number two.

You mean that the telegraph who are in a BS rampage since friday, are linking us with him because he is dutch.

Valdes would be a better bet than Cillisen. Valdes one issue is his ability to deal with crosses. If that can be improved, he'll be excellent. Cech, as good as he is, doesn't suit what van Gaal wants in a keeper.

I actually hope we sign Clyne instead of Liverpool but it doesn't look like we're interested.

Clyne, Otamendi, Smalling, Shaw would be a good back four to go with next season.

Go for Bastian to help Carrick for that slot in midfield or possibly partner him in midfield. Then possibly Gundogan or Schneiderlin for the LCM position in the 4-3-3.

My problem is that I'm not sure which striker we should go for. I feel we need a pacy striker to compete with Rooney. I know we've been linked with Firmino but he isn't a natural number 9.
