Yes, being in the CL should make a positive difference. What remains my worry is that since Fergie's retirement we have adopted a scatter gun approach, so, I remain skeptical until things change for the better.
Also, I think at the very top clubs, the managers job is more managing and getting the best out his resources rather than coaching. It is very tough to coach world class players like Rooney and Di Maria into different players than they already are. I don't think you can buy expensive players and then complain about them not dancing to your tune. These players are worthless if you curb their natural instinct. Like I said in my first post that you quoted - goalkeepers who could keep, strikers who could score a bucket load, defenders who can defend and weren't chosen because of their preferred foot & wingers who had pace and created chances for our strikers - should be able to fit most plans.
I think buying and selling tailored to manager's needs happens at every other top club. Mourinho sold Mata and De Bruyne because they didn't fit his plans inspite of both being top class. Barcelona bought Ibra but sold him at a huge loss because Guardiola didn't found any use of him in his system.
