Yes, being in the CL should make a positive difference. What remains my worry is that since Fergie's retirement we have adopted a scatter gun approach, so, I remain skeptical until things change for the better.

Also, I think at the very top clubs, the managers job is more managing and getting the best out his resources rather than coaching. It is very tough to coach world class players like Rooney and Di Maria into different players than they already are. I don't think you can buy expensive players and then complain about them not dancing to your tune. These players are worthless if you curb their natural instinct. Like I said in my first post that you quoted - goalkeepers who could keep, strikers who could score a bucket load, defenders who can defend and weren't chosen because of their preferred foot & wingers who had pace and created chances for our strikers - should be able to fit most plans.

I think buying and selling tailored to manager's needs happens at every other top club. Mourinho sold Mata and De Bruyne because they didn't fit his plans inspite of both being top class. Barcelona bought Ibra but sold him at a huge loss because Guardiola didn't found any use of him in his system.

I didn't read it because we clearly follow two different clubs. Our views on how the team played are so totally on opposite sides of the spectrum that it doesn't even make sense to talk about it.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

I shouldnt have bothered like most people tend to do when it comes to your views on Van Gaal, never mind. I'l keep that in mind going forwards.

There's some naivety in some of the comments in the previous few pages. Are we really going to take the line that distribution with feet isn't very important as long as the keeper is a good shot-stopper? it's as if some people blindly don't pay attention to what LvG requires of De Dea.

It's not simply a case of the goalkeeper to right back, or centre-back; he has to be somewhat good enough to play the ball out diagonally to wingers accurately in order to by-pass pressing from other teams. This requires some level of passing skill; to simply not have it plays against the entire approach LvG takes.

 Damn, was it supposed to hurt?

Not unless you're about 10 and sensitive as a clit. It was simply my thoughts on you when it comes to Van Gaal. I was actually in 2 minds before even replying as you're cynical about most things regarding Van Gaal but I decided to reply nonetheless. A mistake as it turns out later.

That is okay, though we don't seem to have clear idea on that either, which is my point. I have seen at least two threads here, there are possibly more, on "Van Gaal's strikers" and no one has been able to nail down on a definition. We promoted and bought these tailored players, and now we think they are either squaddies or not good enough. The top quality needed in a defender still remains his ability to defend; we have seen having a left foot or ability with the ball or some balance doesn't necessarily make a good defender.

I would have responded if you tried to make a reasonable response based on reality not on some philosophy.

Let's call it quits though. Cheers.

I can totally see why @Rado_N and other mods were so adamant on not allowing discussion in this thread. Apologies, mate, feel free to delete my nonsense from the thread. I would be wiser in the future.

Not only that, but the high line requires a goalkeeper with good speed and good agility, a goalkeeper with good athleticism.

We did that to keep the tweets easily viewable, but with Niall managing to get the tweets auto filter working quicker than we anticipated it's no longer necessary. Chat away.

and the issue of more chatting meaning tweets are posted less frequently but with internationals its a slow day anyway. Will probably pick up again around 10-11ish when the "Sunday shite" is revealed by the papers

Would nani not get in big bother for that move??

Doubt it, De Gea wont. Maybe some hardcore fans will throw some tantrums but in this day an age there is not much loyalty around. Benfica are bigger and better than Sporting.

If any truth in this the latest in a long line of Gaitan rumours that surely spells the end to Firmino coming here.

How good is Stones at RB? Is he a CB filling in there or is he actually a good fullback as well?

Nani already said he will never play for any other team in portugal.

As if Walcott and Chamberlain would be remotely interested to Mourinho....

If he'd be able to keep them fit, he'd probably have a very talented player at his disposal. Chelsea are much better than Arsenal in that regard. Not that I see this happening though.

I read that but people change their tune. Not saying it will happen but it would not surprise me. Nothing does to me anymore in football.

Stones would make a lot of sense. Young, English, talented, versatile. Would cost us, I'd imagine, around £20m?

Doesn't seem quick or skilful enough to be a right back, but due to his obvious defending talents I wouldn't be opposed to us signing him for that position.
