Transfer Tweets - Manchester United - 2024/25

Tier 4 (same exact content as Ben Jacobs's Tweet, who referenced Alex Crook in his Tweet):

The official announcement:

The fee for Rúben Amorim only is confirmed to be €11m.

He's head coach though so doesn't really have much say in our transfer targets.
Whilst that's the case, at Sporting, he had more control than a typical head coach, so I wouldn't be surprised if he has a say in the transfer committee at United though he wouldn't have that much power.

Well yeah I suppose what I mean is he can't say for definite that we won't be in for anyone, unless, of course, he's stipulated as part of the deal that we won't take anyone from them in January.

You're still correct. If United wanted to, they can inquire about Sporting players in January. I don't think they'll want to disrespect Sporting, though, given that they already took away their most important person in Amorim in the middle of the season.

I don't get what's disrespectful about a club enquiring about a player of another, would they prefer to sell to someone else? No, they'll have a price in mind and I'm sure they'd accept it from any club.

If we started to talk about half their playing squad for months on end expecting to get a cheaper price due to the previous managerial link, then that would be disrespectful.

That is exactly what I was implying in the second part of my statement. Inquiries are fine, but attempting to lower the price to something undesirable or pushing a player who's not for sale to ask to be sold for an amount less than the release clause is going to cause problems.

I think too much has been put into this - it's not like we go from a) the manager makes all the transfer decisions to b) the sporting director makes all the transfer decisions. We are just going from a situation where manager identifies the players he wants, to a situation where a sporting director identifies the players he feels is best for the club. But no sporting director would ever sign a player the manager doesn't want. If Amorim wants Gyökeres or Hjulmand or whoever - he will recommend them in meetings with the sporting director - who will look at them and see if he also thinks they are the best players in that position.

Ofcourse the manager will still be consulted but having an actual sporting director in place should theoretically allow us to minimise the risk on signings and hopefully avoid another Antony/Sancho/Maguire situations where we can't shift them or take a huge loss because they were overpaid.

I think this is one thing they have done well summer. All the signings were made at a price point where if they don't work out the loss on them is minimal. We can easily shift Zirkzee on for 20-25m, Ugarte/De Ligt for 30-35m in case they don't work out.

I imagine they'll sign Hjulmand or Gyokeres if only if they are comfortable with the player and the price too. If not, they'll suggest alternative targets which is what this new structure should allow us.

I’m sure he’ll have a veto like all our previous managers. He’s also the principled kind of guy who will kick off/resign if we ignore him and go for SCP players before he’s ready to. When he say he won’t raid them in Jan I believe him.

He's not a manager and doesn't have a veto.

He's not a manager and doesn't have a veto.

In reality he has - because no sporting director would ever buy a player who the manager doesn't want. It's probably more a case of a sporting director identifying 3-4 alternatives based on what the manager wants - and they decide together which is the best alternative

I'm sure one of the journalist says he doesn't have a veto, but they probably meant it in a sense that he doesn't have as much sway/input as ten Hag had.

I don’t expect him to have the control ten Hag and those before him had, but there’s no way he would agree to work with a player he didn’t want, nor would I expect the hierarchy to force a player on him either.

Tier 1 (Tobias Altschäffl):

Both Sesko and Gyökeres have United interested in them. If you're curious, the last name on the list is Openda, who United aren't currently monitoring.

We're not spending £63 million on another striker in January.

Pretty sure Amorim has said he won’t poach any Sporting players in January (my guess is that it’s also part of the agreement he has with Sporting), so this feels like a potential summer signing.

I would rather we saved funds for a big squad overhaul in the summer and see what Anorim can do with Hojlund first.

Potentially half of out transfer budget on the hottest striker in football? Seems like a great opportunity to gain on our rivals.

Tier 2:

Goretzka has no plans to leave Bayern Munich in January.

We can't just go for another lesser striker. I know Ruben didn't want to poach Sporting players this Jan, but he'll be off regardless, so lets just go for it.
